Air Compressor

Ive wanted an air compressor for a while now just for cleaning motorbike parts and stuff. But soon i'll also have some fairings and a fuel tank to paint and i've decided a compressor would probably work out better and in the long run cheaper than spray cans.

However i dont want to spend much maybe £150 maximum but all the ones for around that price have the same specs anyway. I was looking at this

Could anyone tell me if that would be any good for what i want it for, or does anyone know of anything better?

That'll be Ok for pumping up tyres or something, useless for painting. It's not big or powerful enough by a long way I'm afraid. Don't waste your cash.

you will probs want 100L+ and many filters for painting aswell as something to take the moisture from the air for painting

I disagree. This is your first compressor. You've got everything you need here to get started.

You can paint with this, certainly a bike, even a fully faired one. it'll happily shoot primer, colour and lacquer through that.

It'll inflate tyres, dry engines and electrics, sweep cobwebs ect ect aaaaalllll day long as far as i'm concerned.

Yup, its not an industrial or professional bit of kit, but its no different making do with Rolson tools as opposed to Snap on.

That is about the same size as mine except mine has a tank twice the size.

Can't really say for spraying (never really tried), but it is marginal for air tools. A larger compressor is on my shopping list some time.

I have a similar size one (a Clarke Ranger 48).

It'll JUST run a spray gun. I just did all my kitchen units with it but you need to take your time and give it time to recover pressure. If you were doing anything large with it or using it frequently, you'd probably burn out the motor.

Runs the air tools ok but it'll run out of puff with some of them fairly quickly.

All depends what you want to do with it but bigger = better. Buy the biggest, most powerful compressor you can afford. You can hammer a small nail in with a big hammer but you can't hammer a big nail in with a small one.

Oilless ones are generally a bit more expensive than oiled ones. I personally have no problem putting oil in occasionally (just like your bike, they have a dipstick and filler hole).

I would seriously recommend NOT using the boingy coiled hose, use the thick rubber stuff and get quick release couplers on the end of everything.

Machine Mart is also worth a look, they have a good range of compressors.

The "tool kit" they are doing with that one retails at £20. Works ok but nothing special (cheap Chinese stuff). Lidl/Aldi sometimes do air tools which are ok.

I wish I'd bought the next model up with the 50l tank.

I've got a Wolf air Compressor.

It's 2.5hp and 50litre.

Shop around, mine was around the £160 mark with spraying tools included and different connections.

I sprayed my old scooter with it, impressed with the cheap gun to be honest. As Stinkwheel mentions, it does run out of puff if in constant use but just give it time to build pressure back up and it's fine.

Thanks for all the replies and links. Ive looked at a few now and they all produce about 115 psi is this a standard thing?
