I found myself filtering today. It was my first time, and I had no idea what to do. It was kinda like overtaking in slow motion. Anyway, I'm looking for a tutorial on filtering on YouTube. One where the guy is commentating while he is doing it. I know there are some out there because I've seen some before, but can't seem to find any.

Thanks Thumbs Up

Filtering is all about forward planning and awareness. You can't learn it from a video because the time you'll spend thinking about what you should be doing is the time you should be spending doing it. By all means watch videos but it's not going to help you much.

It's a tricky and hazardous endeavour, you're either comfortable with it or not and it only comes naturally with miles spent in the saddle. If you're just setting out and unsure then just go slowly and give yourself time to react when someone else does something unexpected. Keep an eye on your mirrors for faster riders, let them pass and don't try to keep up with them if you were not riding that fast anyway.

Try and get yourself a canary.

A canary is a lary bike rider who gets up your chuff when you are filtering and most likely going too quickly to react when someone decides to change lanes because when they checked their mirror in 1975 it was clear so it must still be okay.

Move over and let them pass then follow. For a little while (until they leave you behind) they are your advance guard, hopefully they will do one of two things, get taken out instead of you, or wake up sleepy drivers to the fact that bikes are squeezing down the middle. Very Happy

Quick hijack

I am happy filtering around town (where I can with all the tiny streets around Cambridge) but when it comes to duel carriageways I am a bit uncertain. At what speed do you start filtering? I won't usually go until traffic is at a near standstill, but if traffic is sat at a steady 40mph would you start to filter?

Go for a trot down the M25 with Paddy if you want to know how to filter Laughing

Whatever speed you're comfortable filtering at.

Mine depends what kind of mood I'm in. Personally I've been filtering at silly speeds when in a silly mood.

Filtering's pretty easy to be honest, don't do anything you aren't comfortable with. Ride between the cars and don't die. Thumbs Up

My commute has about 5 miles of motorway filtering, unless I'm in a mad rush my limit for starting filtering is about 20mph, but then if traffic speeds up I don't pull in till I'm up to about 40.

I actual find that much easier than through town, at least now im on the 600 not the 125.

Also, if you're slow, move over, I got behind a guy that went 3 junctions round the m60 at 15mph the other day. Ample opportunities for him to pull over, but nothing for me to get past. Had a queue of about 4 of us behind him when he finally got out of the way.

I wouldn't watch many, if any at all, of the 'filtering' videos you see on places such as YouTube. Most of them all are prime examples of what NOT to do. (It's a wonder that the authors aren't a pink stain on the road already).

As has been mentioned, filtering is constant scanning and planning which means that no two instances in which you might filter are going to be alike.

Don't rush when you're filtering, you're just going to end up dead (particularly as a newbie). Look at the situation and assess whether it's necessary. For example: I was coming up to a line of about 10-15 cars at what I know is a fast moving traffic light junction on Tuesday. The lights were red, but as I came up to the 'last car', I slowed down in case the lights were going to change and the traffic was about to go haring off. As it happens, it didn't change until I was about 3 cars from the front and as a result, I just dropped into line again as a space opened up.

If you know someone you trust (or there's someone on here local to you), see if you can't get out on the road a bit with them. It's really amazing what you can pick up just by seeing what other people do. Sometimes you pick up more things you probably SHOULDN'T do, just with a little observation Wink

Let the confidence grow, filter when you're comfortable and soon you'll be slipping between the traffic as easily as a fish through water.

Another vote for 'gets a bit carried away' and ends up doing 120 between cars down the motorway. Neutral

I don't commute on the bike, so the only filtering I do is on country roads when their are roadwork traffic lights jamming up the traffic.

Sometimes when filtering past a long cue of stationary traffic, and cars start coming the other way, I find myself in a situation where there are no gaps for me to move back into my lane, because all the cars are bunched up so close together.

Thats because you don't plan your filtering properly. If you can't see far enough that you can get to the next gap then you shouldn't be filtering.

Move to London and play in the traffic is the bext way to learn.

Anyone who doesn't live or work in London and tells you they are good at filtering is probably telling fibs. Thumbs Up Wink

If anyone wants to lend me a GoPro I'll see what I can do.

Saw a car do exactly this on the A12, following an ambulance between lane 1 and lane 2 as the traffic jam moved to the sides as much as they could to make a gap.

Eventually just before the Eastway tunnel the ambulance stopped and one of the crew got out and told the driver to fuck off. The car then tried to get back into the traffic jam but no one would let him in.

At 6 seconds hew crosses a solid white line.
Filters with full beam on.
Camera is on his helmet, he doesn't do observations or use mirrors.

Overall he isn't good at all.

Though it only half counts as the traffic is only going one way.

Quoted for truth.

I had a 'wait what?' moment when he said he filtered with beams on full. I think the only part I agreed with is that gaps can be potentially dangerous, especially if you're in 2+ lanes of traffic moving the same direction and cars are more likely to lane jump.

A small titbit of good advice in a whole bucket of bad.

I personally still hold to the opinion that you cannot 'learn' to filter by watching videos. It's something you develop on your own in a style and manner that works for you.

Was a joke, although it seems a good idea. Very dangerous cause I bet the majority of drivers won't look before pulling back in lane.

Yep. Very bad start to a 'tips' video Laughing

Saying that, he admits he's a noob at it and doesn't really like it as it's "nerve racking"

I know that road (Rochester Way Relief road) and it's a frekin nightmare at that time of day.
