Bike tyres

Whilst bumbling up the A3 today at my usual 50-55mph (it's all the bike will do comfortably!), it dawned on me that having a tyre blow out on a motorbike would be pretty disasrtous.

Has anyone suffered from this before? Are bike tyres designed to withstand catastrohpic failure?

......after that jolly thought, i went back to whilstling the tune that I woke up to at 6am this morning.

Rear tyre generally is fine.
Front tyre leaves you a lot more to worry about.
I've been going along the M4 at under triple figure speeds (shan't say how much under Wink

) and not noticed for a while that my rear was entirely flat.

Had a front delamination and blow out on a GSXR1100 at speed on the M1 or possibly the M6, can't remember which it was so long ago.

Indeed, craig's granddad (who had been to some BCF rides I think) was killed when his front tyre suffered a blow out.
Believe he hit the barrier in the central reservation.

I've had plenty of flat front tyres riding off road, but everything's a bit different then.

I've had both go flat at speed, wasnt nice, like riding on marbles with a tankslapper and drifting the back out all at the same time, both feet down easing it to a stop, change of pants required at that point,,
I bought two pilot power tyres and had them fitted by a very reputable bike shop in south Glasgow, went about ten miles up the motorway at 60 and both went flat, bike was like jelly, pulled in walked the bike to the nearest garage and blew them up, turned out they werent put on the bead right. put 80 psi in both and let them down to the right pressure wasnt a problem after that.
needless to say I dont like pilot tyres. not sure what a blowout would be like though I wouldnt want to try it.

Front blew out on the M4 at the end of august this year.....

ER-6f was a write off, I'm mostly OK now except that my shoulder dislocates now and then.

I posted a thread about it at the time.

Had a front tyre blow out on the Autoroute at 80mph. Front the looks of it, the metal banding in the tyre failed. The tyres lost pressure, then overheated blowing a massive hole on the tyre.

It was all a bit of a non--event though. All that happened was that the steering got very heavy then the head of the bike shook violently, but it was easy enough to slow down and pull over.
