So, went out for a ride yesterday and noticed that when i started getting up to top speed, around 50+ in fifth gear I started getting an, as best as I can describe... shrrr'ing sound, which continues while im at this speed until I slow down and it completely stopped when I dropped it into third.
So it starts in fifth and continues if I drop to fourth but stops in third. The noise is quite disconcerting, however, I couldn't really try and pinpoint it as there's so much other noise at that speed, but it definately wasn't the wind before anyone points that out.

To try and clarify some more on the noise, its more of a windy kind of shrrr'ing noise and sounds obviosuly different to the hum of the engine but its definately coming from the bike and its not the wind as it completely stopped at the same time as I dropped it into third.

Any help on this would be appreciated, I've only been riding 3 weeks so am pretty noobish.

The bike itself: 05 plate cg125, 6000 miles, serviced every year and serviced 3 weeks ago when I bought it.

Its nothing to worry about. Its just air accoustics as you near the sound barrier.

mine dose the same just keep an eye on the oil level as when i do my oil change every 700 miles (i use cheep o oil) i have a look at the leve every week and it stays the same then at around 800 miles it starts to drop quits fast thats why i do oil every 700 miles
but i ride alot i do about 600miles every 4 weeks more if i go out on my days off work and average 50/60mph

i wouldn't say its nothing to worry about but with that amount of miles chances are its nothing serious i have a hartford vr 125 which has the same engine as the cg a noise come into mine at high speed turned out to be the gudgeon pin that broke although no shame for the bike it has 43k miles 15quid later and as good as new again.

I have a CG that makes all these funny noises and I still lol'd Very Happy

It should cruise happily at 55-60mph if everything's in order and you haven't got lunatic gearing (if you put it in 3rd, hang on to the throttle for grim death, and it hits the limiter before 50, then it's a bit under-geared... mine does it at 56* and I still want to give it longer legs).

Some of the noises I get, I've figured as, variously:

Arrow Dry chain. This can be hella noisy, though you should hear it at low speed as well, and particularly if you spin the rear wheel by hand. Have you lubed it recently? I'm just using old 80w90 gear oil from a car I had ages back. It's not 100% ideal, but it loosens the chain up just nicely, doesn't fling off much so long as you apply sparingly and give it time to soak in, and above all it's effectively free Wink half a 1L bottle (originally about £8) has lasted me a couple years so far. Applying it using an old grease-nipple metal squirty bottle thing has proven a lot easier than dribbling out of the bottle itself, even though it has a narrow neck.

Arrow Engine being well up the rev range. At A-road and motorway speed a low capacity engine in any vehicle will be running pretty fast. You may start hearing noises that are either transient at lower speeds (because you accelerate through the RPM that produces them, then shift up), or are resonant and don't develop until you've spent at least a few seconds at the same speed. Remember there's only about as much range across the ratios as you'd get between 1st and 3rd in a car (or 1st and 4th in a 6sp sports box). If your gears are like mine it'll be begging for a sixth gear at 65+ mph, so 50 will already be running it reasonably fast. There's nothing particularly bad about this, so long as the motor can take it (and it can)... after all it's not developing max torque until 7000rpm, so the designers are expecting it'll be going fairly rapid to maintain decent output power.

Arrow Lack of engine lubrication. Double check your oil level before it seizes...
Or, poor quality / worn out oil. How long since you changed it and what grade did you use?

Arrow Misadjusted (or unadjusted) valve clearance. Not something you generally bother about with an OHC engine but pretty critical with an OHV. Too slack and you'll get accelerated tappet wear and poor power output (maybe that's why you're cruising at 50?), too tight and you risk piston to valve contact as well as possible power loss from poor sealing of the combustion chamber. And it might get noisy(er) in either case.
OTOH, as it's a pushrod engine, it'll get pretty bloody noisy at high RPM anyway as it has a comparitively huge and rattly valvetrain with lots of potential slack. Think about the last time you heard an old Fiesta or early model Ka go past - they had Ford's last OHV engines in (because they're low-profile!), and they sound like tractors off-idle.

Arrow Artefact of the gearbox design. Mine whines and whirrs and skchhhhes in various ways, particularly on the overrun, but as far as anyone can tell that's just what it does. It hasn't got any worse or had any detectable ill effects in nearly 10,000 miles of ownership.

Arrow Could just be the helmet. Try riding in a strong headwind and tailwind and see what difference it might make. Borrow a helmet of different brand from someone with a similar size head. Wear earplugs. etc.

* For testing purposes only, mind. It's a bad idea to run an engine at limited revs for any length of time unless it's an emergency, or it's a big diesel (as their limiters are set VERY low, way below what would be considered the "red line" rather than a little way beyond it). Besides, the rather oldskool low-tune power curve on the CG lump means you're better off shifting up at or a little over 45mph instead (which is why I want longer gears... it's gutless over 65 in top, but there's enough in reserve at 60 to take it to much higher speed without using massive RPMs). For reference, I've only kissed the limiter - 10500 or 11000 depending who you believe - a couple times in top, REALLY rushing to get somewhere... and that was with the speedo needle bent right over to 81mph.
