looking at getting a scottoiler for the XT and wondering if it'd be worth me getting the high capacity touring model as i've been doing a couple of hundred miles a day regularly on it.

How many miles do you get out of a fill?

oh, and can you fill it with any old junk, like used engine oil?

Depends on many many things, single ar dual injectors, flow rate you set it at, viscosity of the oild you use, temperature, blah blah blah.

I fill mine with ATF oil from work and fill it up when it runs out. Buy one, fit it and enjoy your prolonged chan life.

I get roughly 1000 miles out of mine. But that is a rough guess. If you are using old engine oil it shouldnt matter a stuff how long you get between fills as it only takes a matter of seconds to do.

Thats ok. I was thinking it might be 400 miles and could need doing every day on some occasions and it'd do my head in.

Might look for the touring kit so i just top it up once a week

Hi,

If like mine it's actually quite inaccessible (under the front seat) then the follow should give you a few ideas.

https://www.xrv.org.uk/forums/attachments/bodgers-corner/2858d1226672980-diy-scottoiler-bottle.jpg

https://www.xrv.org.uk/photopost/data/500/medium/DSCN0741.JPG

I used a fairy washing up liquid bottle, for what it's worth, the black tubing fits nicely in the top of the bottle, bit of epoxy and a hole for the air to go in and job's a good 'un!

I do happen to have a high capacity reservoir too, and my biggest complaint is you have to remove the number plate to top it up. It's also so long between top ups I forget to actually check it.

Mine (std sized reservoir) seems to need filling about every 3rd fill up (so 500/600 ish miles) on the GPZ500

I do however have a slightly annoying drip that continues after the ignition is turned off ...and I have started to leave small patches where I park up despite me stripping and cleaning the unit and replacing the delivery tube

"engine off" drip patch size does vary- this mornings was a bit of an impressive slick...then after my luchtime sammich run it only left a 10p sized blob by hometime

Currently running a 50/50 blend of chainsaw oil (testing the low fling properties) and used (but filtered through a spray paint filter) engine oil - which is also a blend of 10/40 and 5/30 from the fleet that litters the driveway and garden (I may have chucked some fork oil in there a few times as well)

I have placed my reservoir pretty much vertical next to the heatsink attached to the regulator recifier to try and keep it a consistant temp (though is possibly made of fail due to the length of fairly exposed tubing)

I'm currently not getting /much/ fling or splatter from this mix and the chain is certainly "wet" with lube (not bothered counting 1 drip every 2 mins with my "new blend" yet)

I should possibly turn the drip rate down a tad...but I am not coating my tyre with the stuff and it looks like I pretty much have a lifetime free supply even at this high rate

Regards
Rob

Just lost one on ebay despite bidding £22 on it.
There's no more ending for 2 days. Have to keep on spraying it with lube

A dripping scottoiler is usually a knackered one way valve. The small rubber L-shaped bit that connects to the carb vacuum take off. They are cheap so just replace it.

If you put the oil reservoir where you can see it then you can turn it to a lower setting if you think you are using it up too fast. My last one was actually in the fairing next to the clocks.

Everyone I know personally that had the numberplate touring pack never got it to work properly.

Don't forget to search for "scotoiler"
IIRC mine was a single "t" typo'd bargain

Can see one on there now at £20 buy it now (admittedly without tubing)

The vac and feed tubing can be sourced from a scrappy or a car spares place

feed tube is the same as windcreen washer tube and the vac tube and a 90 degree elbow can be sourced from under the bonnet of certain modern cars - despite the death of vacc operated advance/retard dissys from the 70's/80's- narrow bore hard plastic tube (PTFE?) seems to still be in flavour for vac operated solenoids and EGR valves and such decades later

(the "nibs" that dispense the oil to the sprocket is also the same stuff)

Regards
Rob

I've got it on my watching list but would rather pay another fiver to have it arrive on my doorstep with all the pipes and bits.

will almost leave change for a mars bar from your fiver (to be consumed whilst adjusting the drip rate?)

There may even be someone doing it cheaper off the roll locally to you?

I bought my new feed pipe from Halfords and cannot recall how much I paid...wasn't silly expensive tho

Mine lasts about 1000 miles but you can DIY a high capacity reservoir. Basically secure a bottle to your bike, fill it with oil and route the filler tube/air breather pipe from the top of the scottoiler into the bottle of oil.

i.e. the sauce bottle:

EDIT: I didn't read the above posts, I have been beaten to it.

Tip: if you have an issue with your Scottoiler, contact their technical support department - I bought a second hand one from eGay a few years ago, it dripped a bit when the bike was standing, no matter what I did to adjust it.
I spoke to one of their tech-support chaps, and he gave me a few things to try - when these didn't fix the problem, he told me to send it up to them to look at.
They replaced about 90% of the components and shipped me back a fully working oiler......for free!

Thumbs Up

If you are going to greenlane the XT then it might be better to point the outlet at the front sprocket rather than the rear as they get torn off by ruts/vegetation.

I was thinking that.
The rear sprocket might be a bit open for it. It'll be hidden behind the frame somewhere and piped securely.

It might be made of fail, the reg/rec get's bloody hot, the frame behind mine on the sv does anyway and it's working just fine.

Try touching that heatsink after rideing for half an hour or so (wet your finger first, no you won't get an electric shock unless the R/R is fecked)

Congrats on the oiler setup Marmalade
If your bike has one of those plastic chain guide thingies on the swing arm I reckon something could be added to drip oil in there somewhere - and could be made pretty robust for little effort/cost

anyway I have managed to fix my leaky issues
dunno what I did differently this time

stripped it down completely (again) , gave it all a good clean internally, gave the spring under the diaphragm a bit of a tug (lengthened it by a cm or so) popped it all back together set it up as 1 drip every 2 mins...engine off ....hey presto no more leaks

(took longer to initially prime than it usually does from empty so maybe my spring or valve had become unseated ?)

Went to the Brightonia doo today, when I came back to my bike several hours later I was pleasently surprised to see no oil had dripped (ok there was literally about 1 drip mark from under the front sprocket..but none from the rear where the dispenser nozzle sits)

Checked the levels in the reservoir when I got back and its hardly used any at all - it has dropped , but not by much

Will double check its /still/ set to roughly 1 drop every 2 mins when I get time this week

could be on target for the quoted circa 1000 miles between fill ups Smile

Regards
Rob
