 |
|
from what i remember of cbt training, i am supposed to go round the inside of a roundabout when exiting it at a 12 oclock position. does this apply when its a double lane entrance but single lane exit?
i have the roundabout pictured below on my way to work, i enter the roundabout on the inside lane and exit at the 12 oclock position, which is a single lane. the road coming right to left is the major road here.
am i doing this right and what is the thinking behind sitting on the inside of the roundabout and jumping off at the 12 oclock position rather than going round the outside which would give an easier exit, surely?
thanks for any advice, its been bugging me a while this one.
Rob

Either is correct, although quite often there are arrow markings painted on the carriageway which you should obey.
You need to be wary of others in the wrong lane.
I've sometimes seen less confident drivers use the left lane even when going right.
If you're in the RH side you need to be watching them very carefully, and avoid blind spots at all costs if running almost alongside.
In general you're probably best using the left lane for straight ahead unless there are other vehicles queuing there.

12 O'Clock you should be in inside lane, anything past 12 use the outside lane and start moving inside as you pass the exit before yours.

Unless there's some signage that I can't see, I'd probably use the left hand lane in your example. See:
https://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_digitalassets/@dg/@en/documents/digitalasset/dg_070540.jpg
However, it's not hard and fast. If other traffic habitually uses the left lane as a left-only lane, then I'd either use the right hand lane (so as not to get pulled out on at the first exit) and be prepared to ride around if the 2nd exit is blocked, or at least stay way to the right of the left hand lane, possibly even indicate right - not during a test! - but anything to try and stop a pull-out at the first exit if people there are likely to assume that I'm turning off left. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

so there is no difference between cars and bikes when positioning at a roundabout?
i thought as much but i'm sure my CBT instructor said differently
i'll be using the left hand entrance in future, unless a car is there and they are indicating left to exit at first exit, then i will use the right hand lane.
thanks for helping clear that up! ____________________ --Current Bike: '98 Hornet CB600F

Know what really bugs me about Roundabouts?
Edgers, those feckers that want to go but can't quiet make their minds up so they edge out encroaching on your lane as you're coming off the roundabout.
If you know the old Yorkshire Grey roundabout (SE London) you'll now what I mean. They almost steal your bloody exit lane completely.
I've gone round there with my hand up in a 'halt' motion and a glare that Mike Tyson would be proud of, It's that bad sometimes.
Just throwing that in here ____________________ My Lane Position is always AWESOME!! |

If you use the right lane, intending to go straight on, someone waiting to enter the roundabout from your left, and intending to go left, is going to pull out in front of you, leaving you nowhere to go. It wont happen all the time, but it will happen sooner or later. One of the worst things that happens on the roads today is other drivers assuming they know what you're going to do.
I cant stress it enough, using the right hand lane to go straight through in this instance, will see you having a few near misses. Stay in the left lane. |
I will be using the left hand lane from now on, unless someone is sat there already with a left indicator on, then i'll use the right hand lane and look out for people joining from 9 oclock!
thanks for the advice guys ____________________ --Current Bike: '98 Hornet CB600F
