Technically it's a tea table, because I don't like coffee.

I ditched the thought of a V8 coffee table through the weight and expense of the block.
I've always wanted one of these since I first saw them on eBay.

So anyway, I bought one, £50 posted with the intent of mounting a round/oval piece of glass on the top, ideally spaced up on stands away from the wheel, and much larger than the diameter of the rim.

So it arrived looking like this:

https://www.gaz-racing.co.uk/images/vehicle_1649.JPG

https://www.gaz-racing.co.uk/images/vehicle_1647.JPG

It's a Force India/Spyker wheel.

There was some stickers on the face of the rim saying "SET/37" and "FI/07/159/LF"

and "1,644 kms, keep for 2009, 39" in pen written on the side.

A good mate of mine happens to work in F1 tyre development and told me that that sort of mileage is only about 4 race distances. Spyker only raced in 2007 and became Force India in 2008 with only Adrian SUTIL driving in 2007 with Salon and Yamamoto in their second car.

If anyone can shed any light on the history of this wheel, please let me know!

Anyway, it sat in the corner of my lounge for nearly a year before I pulled my finger out and spent £42.18 on mirrorsandglass.co.uk
I got a 310mm diameter circle, in 10mm thick toughened, tinted grey glass, with polished edges. That size because it'll sit ontop of the spokes inside the rim. It doesn't give a massive surface area for cups etc, but it makes mounting it very easy.

If I wanted to still fit it on posts, I'd have to get very accurate holes drilled in it (which you can't do with toughened glass, I'd have to get it done, then have the glass toughened), and I'd have to get hold of the posts, and I'd have to drill/tap the rim. None of which I was happy with.

So instead I bought some adhesive rubber pads to sit the glass on.

Then came painting. The rim was tatty around the edges, which was fine, it looked used. But the actual part of the wheel that would be covered by tyre wasn't painted, so it looked really scruffy, and in this project, it would be seen. So it needed painting.

£29.96 got me a can of primer, a can of laquer and two cans of Halfords own Anthracite 'wheel and wheel trim' paint.

https://www.gaz-racing.co.uk/images/vehicle_1650.JPG

Rubbed down and in primer.

https://www.gaz-racing.co.uk/images/vehicle_1651.JPG

Colour

https://www.gaz-racing.co.uk/images/vehicle_1652.JPG

Couple of coats, went on very smoothly.

Now I'm leaving it overnight to harden properly, then 1200 grit wet and dry paper in the morning and laquer.

Then stick the rubber stands on, and sit the glass on top of them. Perfect!

Hah, believe me, it was considered! Not sure what this thing's made of, so not sure how well it'd take shotblasting. And there's some fairly detailed text on the rim that I didn't want to lose.

And it was cheaper to paint it.

So all in all, Halfords spray paint wins the day. (Not that I'll ever say that again).

I sorta want to make a feature of the side of the wheel, because in comparison to the spokes (which'll be under the glass) it looks really plain. It would lend itself really nicely to a big vinyl decal under the laquer.

It's just picking something suitable. Maybe if I worked out which car/races it was used on/in I could make something from that.

Yeah, I like it, but I don't want to put something there just for the sake of it. And let's face it, I don't realllly want to advertise that it's a rim from some shite team.

I've got some Bristolbikers.co.uk vinyl stickers upstairs that would look good, but then it makes it nearly un-sellable. And I'm not sure I want to make it a shrine to a small website that's not even linked in any way to the table.

Maybe the F1 logo, with BBS or something.

The beauty of this project is it's very easy to make yourself. It's a fairly expensive project. I mean when this is done, it'll have cost me about £125. And for that money, you could buy a nice ready made table.

Get onto Force India, if they still have the records I bet they'll be happy to help you out.

Emailed. I've also emailed the Spyker official fan site, and the website that I bought it from. They were a bit of a pain last time I contacted them, but I've given them some more info, so hopefully they'll do it.

easiest way would be to put the sticker on after the laquer then so can be changed.

How about a pirelli or goodyear sticker??

That's not a bad idea, a tyre brand.

And yeah I could put it on over the laquer, but would look much cooler under it.

I'll almost certainly laquer it first, because I have the laquer, and I don't have any stickers.

I ordered the glass and the rubber 'feet' on Friday/saturday, so with any luck they might be here Tuesday-ish.
At least if I get the paint done tomorrow when the parts arrive I can just pop them together, and won't really take any assembling.

I was originally planning to, but tbh I'm not sure I could do a good enough job of it. I know it's going to look good all anthracite, and original.

I'd be tempted to do it in black and red, then have the F1 logo on the side, which is black and red.

its easier than it looks,

you need a little sponge and a lint free cloth.

wait till the main paint has completely gone off, sponge the highlight paint into the letters, then dampen the lint free cloth, wrap a bit round your finger and wipe over the letters.

job done Wink

Yeah I did find mention it's magnesium. It's not featherlight, but it is a lot lighter than a steel, or normal alloy wheel.

And Chri5, nice one, that's definitely an option in that case. I've got some red and black hammerite I could use.

I'm thinking do all the text black, except for the SPYKER F1, which I'll do all black, except for the number 1 in red. Then have the logo in big vinyl on the side.

Laquered with three coats. I inhaled quite a lot of it and feel quite strange now!

I decided against painting the lettering, I wanted to keep the rim original, and I was a little worried about ruining the paint job. It just wasn't worth the risk.

I'm chuffed with the finish, it came out really well. It's sat in the garage drying now.

why dont you have the round glass on top with a sticket on the bottom (in reverse) that has something like the details on the rim or the spyker/BBS emblems around the perimeter. it wont get damaged by the shit on top and it'll be all nicely minimalistic and an even more anorak idea.

have the perimeter of the glass say the details that would be round the edge of the tyre. so the glass has effectively replaced the tyre

There's something a bit odd about that wheel, tbh. Is that lumpy surface around the narrowest part of the diameter repeated on the inside in any way? I can't recall seeing an F1 wheel with a surface that uneven and I've seen a lot of F1 wheels.
