Been looking through the Security Overkill thread.

I was wondering what people use/advise when out and about and nowhere near ground anchors and garage?
What do you use/advise if no posts/bars/fences are available?

For convenience I pack a disk lock and small chain/padlock. Can't really carry larger, heavier chain. Won't carry locks, etc. on me or rucksack in case of accident. Park use steering lock, disk lock and chain round the rear wheel so it sits on the seat. I still don't feel this is enough when parking in some cities. Would also say alarm but doubt this would prevent bike from being carried into a van.

Any comments welcome Smile

Steering lock, datatool alarm and sometimes will chain it to something, or just chain through the wheel.

When I park up in town I put the bike in pedestrian areas where blokes lifting bikes into vans would look a bit sus. If I park somewhere else I put the bike in a difficult position to move if the steering and disc lock are on. We have to remember that if someone wants to nick it they will.

Just read Ste comment about putting chain through another bikes chain in Parking Bikes thread.

Assume means through security chain Rolling Eyes.
Sounds like a good solution if you can find a bike bay. Smile

If there is no bike bay I put my chain through the bike next to mine, then the two bikes are chained together and cant be lifted into a van.
The other biker just needs to undo his chain to release his bike. Wink

Perhaps a little off topic (sorry), but how easy is it to move an alarm system from one bike to another? Is it possible? I wasn't going to alarm my first bike, just wait till I get a real one, but the area I live in seems to be rapidly heading down the shitter Rolling Eyes, so maybe it'd be a good idea. Help with the insurance too I guess.

Security?

Laughing

As long as I'm parked next to something else worth £10 or over I figure I should be OK.

Steering lock, disk lock, chain the front wheel to the frame, park it somewhere noticeable. (The bike parking bays are 30 yards from the police station) Mr. Green I just hope they'd notice someone trying to halfhinch it.

Steering lock..... & the fact that thieves in this part of the colonies are never sure if they are in your gun sights or not so theft isn't really a problem. In 14 years I've only heard of 2 people I know having their bikes stolen, one in Florida & the other in Texas.

I had a bike stolen 20 yards away from the carpark entrance of the Lothian and Borders police headquarters at St Leonards in Edinburgh whilst chained to a lamppost in clear view of cars pulling out of the (very busy) police yard.

Thanks for the input - more would be welcome Thumbs Up

Appears I'm one of the few that uses a chain as well as disklock when out and about. I wonder if there's any figures for bikes stolen from where people live against stolen when parked elsewhere?

I use a 2 hefty disc locks one on the back and one on the front.
And a big hefty oxford chain.

And I always try and lock the wheel to a bollard or some other immovable object, preferably the rear wheel. Thumbs Up

Padlock & chain for me. I carry them wrapped around my back seatpad/tailpiece, and always try to chain my bike to something if possible.

My mate had his KLR650 nicked this week by two blokes in a transit - he had disk locks on and a chain, but they just lifted it in. Crying or Very sad It was parked outside his work at the time, busy industrial estate but unfortunately LOTS of vans.

I rely on my alarm system which I prime. However I always try and park up by a wall. A lot of bikes are stolen by being lifted onto a van by sticking strong poles through the spokes in the front and rear wheels, by two people. If they have no access to one side then the bike is harder to lift. If they move the bike the alarm will go off and hopefully alert someone!

Steering lock and leaving it in gear is about as far as security goes on my bike.

In the hugely unlikely event somebody tryed to have away with mine....

Steering lock and a grip lock.. can't use a disc lock becuase the discs dont have vents! also i don't risk forgeting iv'e put it on!

If its at home its garraged, if its away for a long time i take the big chain and a cover...

The best security is parking next to a posher bike, which is never far away.
