According to the Used Bike Guide, the 650 is the better buy of the two. Not only is it cheaper to buy, run and insure, but it's lighter, has a more usable engine, has roughly the same top speed and looks the same.

Cruiser could be a dirty word on these forums Razz

As they go they are very good, the japanese make better cruisers than the highly dangerous which have not been changed for the past 40 odd years... now, i'm going to go hide.

As standard they both sound crap, but both of them sound good (and surprisingly similar) with more open pipes. There also a guy known as the 'Dragstar Doctor' who does a conversion using the standard pipes that makes them sound how they should.

Almost all the Harley range have been changed over the past 5 years. (Still don't want one though)

There should be a website, 'cos he's been around for a while, failing that he often has an ad in BSH. Also there's XV Motors who specialise in that range, dont know if they have a site but they can be reached on 01257 483833.

They are very, very different bikes. I've told you before, you really need to take some test rides.

Yes maybe slightly unfair, they have done one or two interesting things recently but i guess they wouln't be able to bring out anything too wild.. like trimuph bringing out a 150bhp monster cruiser hahahaha can you imagine!... oh... um...

I owned one of these for just over 2 years after I passed my test. Lovely bike, easy to ride and a real eye-pleaser, though really not comfortable at anything over 70mph for more than about 5 minutes.

Unfortunately as I started using it for work all year round, I decided to trade it in for something with a little more weather protection, a little less chrome and a lot more top speed.

But as far as a weekend, sunny weather bike goes, I can't fault it.

I have only ridden the 650 dragstar and if I were to sum it up in one word.....Gutless.

I know they are a cruiser but when all is said and done, it is a 650 V-twin engine, I was expecting something in the way of torque if not top-speed. It had neither. It struggled to make 80mph and when I got back it had blued the headers and was smelling distinctly HOT (like scorched metal) after a short (10 mile) run at around that speed. That said, it was very comfortable and surprisingly manouverable once I was used to the feet-forwards riding position, had to take care not to touch the pegs down. I didn't really notice any jittering from the shaft drive when cornering either (but the lack of power may have been a factor in this)

I was riding a jawa 350 at that time, it seemed slow off the mark even compared to that!

From speaking to people who have owned then, the Virago is a far better bike, the dragstar is a detuned and lardier version.
