PostPosted: 18:32 - 04 Nov 2011    Post subject: Best way to ride in Deep Rain Reply with quote

Just got back in from the torrential rain that we have had, but on the journey back had to ride in knee deep rain. Now the way I was riding it was lift both legs up to control the tank with my knees and then use full acceleration to get through (road ahead was clear nothing on the pavement).

Now that is considered dangerous and most probably going get some bad replies,
However what is the best way to ride in that situation ?

(to note seen a load of cars stall in the rain)

We had torrential rain last night and this morning so the best way is take the car, which I did Laughing

Yea, I'm a freakin wimp, BUT in my defense I STILL don't have decent waterproofs for my nether regions!

Sorry, I dunno about bringing the knees up though. I'd just go slow and stuff but knee deep, literally?? That's pretty bad man, sure you don't live somewhere with monsoons? Laughing

Kudos to you for riding in that crap mate!! Very Happy

I'd treat it like slow control. High revs, and control your speed with the clutch.

And be aware of where your air intakes are.

Going quickly sounds like a bad idea.

Yeah I forgot my waterproofs wasn't raining when I left the house so only had the weise fusion gloves and Revitt trousers which were soaked. Akito Leather jacket held up though warm and dry.

The thing is that If I went slow then there would be a higher chance of stalling, with not enough power I heard that if you bring your knees up then you can control the bike more with balance.

Got to say though I feel like a better rider for riding in the rain, even had a taxi stop me and ask If I wanted a lift home because he thought I shouldn't be riding Rolling Eyes

Pull a massive wheel through the flooded area.

It lifts the engine up so you dont get it flooded and there is technically 50% less chance of aquaplaning. Thumbs Up

And as an added bonus, also keeps your feet dry.

Would advise probably not to take my advise but if it is knee deep, I assume it is exhaust height and probably air intake height, dependant on bike.

So if you go slow, you will drown the bike but if you go quicker, your front wheel will give the moses effect so the water spreads outwards, meaning the exhaust and air intake will now be above the water.

You may aquaplane though and I am probably wrong Laughing

Stand up on the pegs and make sure you don't shut off the throttle quickly. Keep the power on and look ahead, not at your front wheel.

Enter the water slowly and keep the power on throughout.

TBH, if the standing water was really knee deep, and you made it through safely, then I don't think you need any tips - in fact, I'd suggest you should probably be giving lessons to serious off-roaders, adventure riders and the like.

Pffft, knee deep is nothing. When it gets up to the seat you have to worry.

The problem with riding fast through deep water is, maybe a hole, or tarmac lifted, or a brick on the road dropped from a lorry, even broken glass.
You did the right thing with your revs, but a little slower riding would have been my way.
