I want to powder coat my wheels, as they are scratched to hell anyway from what I presume are numerous tyre changes done by hand.

Places that advertise wheel powder coating want £80+ , while a general powder coating company will do it for £15.

Has anybody any experience of using general powder coaters instead of motorbike specific powdercoaters? I am all too aware stuff marketted to niche groups is almost always more expensive.

For example basic eye protection is cheap, stick skydiver eye protectors and the price often quadruples.

You may end up with loads of work removing 'overspray' and chasing threads as many non specialists don't mask the right places or don't bother at all. Getting coating off is very hard if its a good job.

It's a job you want to do right first time as doing it again means messing around removing and refitting the tyres which will probably cost £20-30 unless you fancy attacking your perfect shiney rims with a couple of tyre levers. You'll also need new bearings at a cost of a tenner a wheel unless you are lucky enough to have a bike with odd sized ones, in which case they will be much more expensive and usually dealer only.

You can get both wheels blasted, perfectly masked and coated at my local one which is known as one of the best in the country for £87 so imo it's not worth the hassle of going cheap.

I'm sure there are a few general coaters out there who can do a perfect job for much cheaper but £15 sounds too cheap.

The powder coating myth/panacea is just that.
It is simply a method of applying a protective coating.
If the under-surface is flawed i.e. full of dings, gouges and assorted shit then the powder coating and/or shot blasting alone will not cover it.
You may need the surface properly prepared.
It is not cheap to do a good job.
You get a cheap finish for cheap.
