PostPosted: 14:20 - 14 Nov 2011    Post subject: Got The Job Reply with quote

Just managed to ring a place that was recruiting Rouge Recruitment not shore if anyone has heard of them but got an interview on Thursday what would be best to wear?

Told him may be riding down on motorbike and he said that is cool, so not sure .. as wouldn't be able to wear a suit under that.

Just wondered if anyone on here has ever worked in a role of recruiting or able to look at my CV and help me improve it. Having major money troubles at the moment and with little working experience/ possible horrendous Cv having problems finding a job.

So any help regarding the CV would be extremely helpful.

(It has got that bad apparently I don't have enough work experience to work in several charity shops ... maybe it's just me and not the cv.. anyways look forward to replies)

Meh tbh even with a good CV 5+ years work experience and relative stability and qualifications, employers are still very very finicky tbh.

And I'd be wary of recruitment consultants/ agents tbh. They are pretty much lower than the belly of a snake. A hell of a lot of the jobs advertised are fakes designed to harvest CVs. You may get a helluva lot of spam and junk mail and telephone calls trying to sell you stuff after you register.

At the moment can't really sign up to many job agencies due to full time student 9-5 5 days a week (due to go down to 3 days a week).

But will definitely be wary of them when looking for jobs thank you fatpies.

That CV looks all arse-about-face to me.

Education before work experience, work experience going from first to last, duplicate statements in 'Profile' and 'Skills' and so on.

If it were mine, I'd lay it out something like this....

Nothing worse than people saying stuff like "I am a good team player and I can also work well on my own".

Of course you are going to say that! Just make your big + points really obvious.

Where to start.....

Look at the points I've made... Your grammar and use of English is poor.

You don't need to quantify all sentences with an 'also' or a 'can'.

I don't know if this is the layout you're using, but the bullets seem to be in the wrong place ( could be just due to copy pasta though).

You need to quantify your skills, how are you a good team worker ? How do you adapt to changes ? I could write 'I have a massive cock' doesn't mean an employer will believe it (although it is true)...

I find it a bit disappointing that kids don't seem to get taught how to write a CV properly nowadays (or write in any form of coherent manner for that matter)..

Sorry if its a bit harsh, but I wouldn't even consider you working for me if that was how you represented yourself, but I hope my criticism makes some sense to you....

They do get taught.....just not very well. I found that the general package at uni encouraged those types of statements without emphasizing that more detail and personal information relative to one's self should be added.

Not to mention the fact that there's no such thing as a perfect CV, as I tested for myself when taking my CV from lecturer to lecturer, each one making changes, and saying it was perfect, only for the next one to tear it to pieces and change it completely, repeated about 4 times. In the end I ignored all of them and went with what I felt sounded good/right.

With that said writing a CV is a fucking painful process, just spouting out generic bullshit that says a lot without really saying anything, I am due to redo mine and have been putting it off for the last month or so because it literally hurts my brain to think of how many different ways to write what a perspective employer wants to hear without sounding like the other 100 CVs that are landing on their desk. It'd be nice if you could just write down the plain facts and be honest, but sadly that doesn't work.

You went to staffs... So your already at a disadvantage, but don't panic. (ex Keele student Mr. Green )

What year are you in? 1st/ 2nd/ 3rd?

If your in your 3rd year, what grades you heading towards? Pending is an excuse for not doing very well!

What jobs are you applying to? If this was a legal CV it would have met the shredder almost immediately. I'd take your CV to some careers people at staff's to help clear your CV up. You need to bullet point, be clearer and extend your personal skills & hobbies.

If someone looks at your CV with education and no extra information they will think your dull or boring.

Ok, honest question.

Are GCSEs so watered down now you can get a C without knowing how to spell "sure"?

GSCE's are piss easy so yes.

DO NOT put your grades in your CV. Just put 12 GCSE's or whatever unless you got all A*.

Sorry, that's rubbish. Skills and hobbies are rarely related to the job you are applying for therefore take up space that you could use to add relevant information.
They are subjective as well; the example that comes up often on BCF is 'should I put that I ride a bike on my CV'. The answer is always NO (from me at least). What you enjoy someone else may hate and when it comes to the paper sift its that kind of bias that will see you binned.

By all means give a line or two away to the more 'human' aspects of your life but no more, leave it for the interview when you can better guage how interested they might.

Edit:
Another quick point: Google yourself! Bung your email address into a search engine and make sure nothing nasty comes up. If it does, create a new account just for job hunting.

Depends on what job your applying to and at what level. In the legal industry they want to see individuals who have a bit more to them than outstanding grades. In business they want to see what extra curricular stuff you've done which shows leadership, team working, or a generally interesting persona. If you include shit like I like playing the PS3, that is not very good. You dont stand out saying you got a 2.1 at staffs, there are 4000 others who got that 2.1 and likely at better uni's...

Putting "I ride bikes" on a CV is about as bad, but if you expand and state you self taught yourself motorcycling mechanics and rebuilt an engine it makes you stand out compared to some idiot who puts "I ride bikes" on their CV.

When you are starting off then yes, I agree, use your hobbies as a way of showing you are capable. Once you have a few years and a couple of jobs behind you, what you do outside of work has no place on a CV.

As said before, details about relevant work experiance are worth far more than knowing what you do at weekends and considering you only have 1-2 pages, every line counts.

I apologise, I should have been clearer.

By 30+ you usually have several training courses and employers, whilst most people leaving uni are lucky to have a supermarket job. It helps to show they are the type of person that will fit-in in the office.

I've included stuff like my flying, mechanics and general pro-bono (charity) work as it makes me look better than the other 500-800 applications per position that are also applying. Law is more competitive than ever due to the lack of new training contracts over the past 5years. Crying or Very sad

Trousers, shoes (polished), shirt and tie. Remember to wash your hair, clean your finger nails, and smile and look interested.

Plenty of CV tips in Auntie BCF section, all you need to do is search CV and hundreds should come up.

CV should never be more than two pages - unless asked for (some engineers etc. can have technical knowledge lists which plough on for five pages).

You don't need to call your CV a CV on the page... potential employers dislike being told the obvious. Plus its an extra space for either space or text. Use a simple font like Calibri, Arial or Gill Sans. Nothing old fashioned like Times New Roman.

Lots of help previously, it's a popular topic. Thumbs Up

I was talking about this with Y10 today as they have work experience interviews coming up and they did not like my answer. They wanted to wear their hottest clothes, Armani jeans, peddle pushers and tops with logos and Nike trainers. I told them to dress like I would not notice how they were dressed. Smart but conservative. Black polished shoes, shirt and tie, suit trousers (and top), even their school uniform with tie correctly fastened would fit in (in your case school uniform would be wrong BTW). Blend in and do not stand out. I interviewed last week and slightly marked a candidate down for wearing a suit with external Gucci labels on the wrists (to flash and I knew it was fake!) nice bloke though and he got the job.
I want to see the candidate not the clothes.
