Hi folks,

But OT but kind related Wink

Ive got an ancient (1950s) seagull 100cc two-stroke outboard engine.

After fixing the broken magneto the engine has been running fine but now wont fire up.

There is a spark, fuel well is full, fuel is free to flow into the carb, the engine turns over, but it wont start...

Im assuming a problem with the carb/mixture but I cant see whats causing it. Any idea what to check? I figure there might be a needle valve blockage?

The engine spins for about a second but just spluttery, then stops.

First try a new spark plug, then clean the jets out.

second that

the fact that you had it running implies settings are not too far out
most likely some shit has been taken from the float bowl and is blocking a needle

remove and clean out carb

if possible do it without turning carb upside down so when you take float bowl off you will see how clean it is... Thumbs Up

Wotcha.

It may be worth checking the crank seals, especially on an older engine.

Has it a choke or an idle adjustment screw? Try making the mixture a bit richer? If it's a mucky filter or something restricting the fuel it should start with a bit more. You could try putting a couple of drops of (petrol?) or something in the cylinder and seeing if that fires up fine? All just ideas off the cuff, so feel free to tell me if they're wrong and probably dangerous. Laughing

villiers carb, the engine is British Seagull make.

The spark looks very healthy when i take the plug out and turn it over. The carb isnt sophisticated enough to have idle adjustment.

Ill try cleaning the carb.

Only thing I do notice is a dark liquid (small amounts) seeping out from underneath the cylinder head - Where the head joins onto an exhaust tube. No idea what this is. I doubt its that the head has a gasket which is blown and thus fuel is being chucked out?
