Question is, if I buy a Power Commander that was for a specific bike, can I put it on another?

I think I need a Power Commander for my 2006 Yamaha MT-03 but funds are seriously limited at the moment and I definitely can't find afford a new one at around £300. No used ones on Ebay but I have seen a Power Commander III for a 2006 Yamaha R6. Would it be possible to fit the Power Commander from something like the R6 and just download the maps for the MT-03 from Dynojet?

Anybody done anything like this?

No.

The connectors are different for each injection system on each bike.

In theory you can snip the old connectors off and wire up new ones. Not sure it would work on the two bikes you describe as the R6 has 4/8 injectors (so four plugs), whereas the MT-03 only has 1 injector (So one plug).

My Mille's PCIII was actually a 2003-2005 Mille PCIII with the 99-2002 connectors soldered on. So it can work, I'm just not sure how compatible it is to be honest.

A little more detail for you. The PCIII is a piggy back ECU (Or flash memory). It sits between the ECU and the injectors. So the signal comes from the ECU for each injector. The PCIII then gets this signal bound for each injector, adds a correction factor to add or remove fuel then sends the signal the rest of the way to each injector.

On the R6 it has 8 injectors IIRC, but we only need to worry about the bottom 4. As your MT03 only has 1 injector you could try removing the three extra plugs from the R6 PCIII and then soldering on the correct plug for your injector (it might even be the same if you're lucky) personally I would have thought this would do something to the PCIII, but it depends how cheaply the PCIII for the R6 is. Might be worth a punt if it's only going to cost you £20.

as that guy said. the only variants are most likely the number of cylinders.

The power commander LCD screen is interchangeable though.

That makes sense guys. I wasn't sure exactly what components on the bike the Power Commander hooked up to. Ithough it might have just connected to to the ECU and maybe onto the TPS or something. Now I know it has connections for the injectors, I think the R6 is not worth the grief. I'll keep an eye out for a Power Commander off an XT660, Aprilia Pegaso and a couple other bikes that use the same engine as the MT-03 to minimise the the amount of messing about with wiring and connectors.

So essentially the unit itself is always the same but comes with a loom specific to the bike you're putting it on and a program specific to that bike too. Am I right? And if I can get one for as close to my bike as possible, it will need less butchery right or possibly even fit straight on?
Thanks for the info guys.

Basically yes.

Between brands I'm not sure how compatible they are, however with stuff from the same model (different years) or the same manufacturer you should be pretty safe.

Where does the grey wire on the PC3 commander harness tie into on your ECU wires? I got a bagillion of them and I just don’t know where to cut and solder it into to. Mine a 2006 YAMAHA YZF R6S(2005 R6 basically)
