I'm going to view my first bike tomorrow, hopefully ride it away that day. But how would I get insurance on a Sunday? If I go through the bikesure website, rather than calling, could I get covered?

Thanks

If you're doing it online, yes you can get immediate cover. I did it recently thru the Hastings website.

Be aware though, that your new policy may not show up on ANPR etc for up to 7 days, so if you were unlucky enought to get stopped it would be adviseable to have your policy info with you if possible.

Just do a printout or at least policy number to carry with you.
Even if your covered but can't prove it due to "circumstances" paying to get your bike out of the compound is very expensive.

If we want to be technically correct - the best kind of correct - then no, you're not.

Road Traffic Act 1988 Section 147

RTA 1988 S147 wrote:

(1)A policy of insurance shall be of no effect for the purposes of this Part of this Act unless and until there is delivered by the insurer to the person by whom the policy is effected a certificate (in this Part of this Act referred to as a “certificate of insurance”) in the prescribed form and containing such particulars of any conditions subject to which the policy is issued and of any other matters as may be prescribed.

We could have a bun fight over the meaning of "delivered" and "certificate" - the Interpretations Act 1978 only refers to posting, not email, and is a PDF or self printed certificate sufficient? - but strictly speaking, the policy isn't valid just because you've paid up.

In practice, I doubt that you'd ever be convicted, since Plod, CPS and judge have all doubtless ignored this provision at some point.

Anyway, tl;dr version, insure online or over phone, get a policy number, job done.

Yea, I do mean for Mr Pedantic Roger Wink as long as you get the policy via email Thumbs Up

I'm of the opinion that 'delivered' in RB's context was before email or even buying online was common place.

When bought online, ride bike Thumbs Up
