When I did my theory last year (for a car)
I did DSA online learning... Cost me £5 for 30 days use.
Gave me mock papers plus HP tests.
I found this a much better then having a CD or book.
Im sure the tests I did for a car were pretty much the same for a bike.

Yep, same test for cars and motorcycles.
Also your advanced instructors are correct. If you click too early the system won't register it.
Makes sense to click when you first see it, and click another time as a safety. Worked for me.
You can fail for clicking too many times, but I think you have to go pretty mad for that to happen. ____________________ My Flickr |

Car and Motorcycle
Current pass mark - 44 out of 75
(questions) And I got 44 Even tho I have been riding for 6 years now.
HP is 44 out of 75 is about the amount to pass ( I beleive) and I got 70 - That was clicking what you deem to be a hazard, the hazzard itself, then after the hazzard (what i did) I think its fairly hard to fail on the HP test. Just dont heavy click |

You have 1 major area per clip.
You have 14 clicks as an absolute maximum.
They do catch you out by giving you a little hazard (pedestrian near a zebra crossing) but they will have a car reverse into your path 10 seconds later So keep your eyes peeled for more than 1 per clip.
Max score per clip is 5, if you click when you see the hazard, when it changes and when its finished you'll be fine... mainly when you see it. The faster yo do it the better as the points get less. 5>4>3>2>1 in the space of 3-5 seconds.
Have it on the PC currently, I haven't reviewed it a lot, had it for a mate to practice and I can score fairly high just clicking when it looks dodgy. |

THe Hazard perception is something i'm slightly worried about too.
I have been driving for over 10 years & now i'm goin the DAS route i will have to face this test. i recently had a go on a CD thing to have a practice & was terrible at it. because i was clicking too early
It's not doing anything for my confidence

Oh, sure, I went for "click (elephant) click (elephant) click" on most hazards and got a decent score. It's a bit of a joke that you have to do that though. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Fumps - I'm in the same position as you mate. I'm not worried about spotting the hazards, just when to register the click. I think the only answer is to practice, practice, practice!
Edit - Just done 2 practice clips online and got full marks for both, maybe I'm worrying un-necessarily? |

The hazard perception test penalises quick reactions. I think that you have to treat it as a game for under 5's as it's so bloody stupid. For example, you see a bus in the distance put on it's indicator to pull out, so you think, "ah, a hazard approaching, better be prepared" (click) - WRONG - you have to wait until the bus starts pulling out before you click, like "oh, there's a bus about to carve me up" It's just not like real life.
Some of the test dvd's are actually much better than the DVLA rubbish as they work in "real time" whereas the test dvd seems so slow. However, don't be at all anxious about it as it is pretty obvious after the first clip that it's so simple. |

Hmmm, I found this older hazard perception vid, must be from way back when Britain had colonies all over the world....

The elephant doesn't seem THAT hazardous though. ____________________ Current: VFR800 2008 13.7k and rising rapidly!
