PostPosted: 23:05 - 25 Nov 2011    Post subject: Hazard perception same as car? Reply with quote

Want to get my theory done asap. I'm not too worried about the questions as have been driving for many years, and have done quite well on the mocks.

The bit that I'm more bothered about is the hazard perception part. I work with some advanced driving instructors who have all said that they struggled with the hazard perception system as they see the hazards and have had to adapt by spotting the hazard and then counting off 3 or 4 seconds before they click as the system doesn't allow you to spot the hazard early. Does anyone know if this is the case?

In any event I want to practice the HP and so am looking for a DVD or app which allows me to do so. There doesn't seem to be a specific motorbike HP test, so can I assume that this part of the test is the same for cars and bikes?

Thanks,
Rich

When I did my theory last year (for a car)
I did DSA online learning... Cost me £5 for 30 days use.
Gave me mock papers plus HP tests.
I found this a much better then having a CD or book.
Im sure the tests I did for a car were pretty much the same for a bike.
Thumbs Up

Yep, same test for cars and motorcycles.

Also your advanced instructors are correct. If you click too early the system won't register it.

Makes sense to click when you first see it, and click another time as a safety. Worked for me.

You can fail for clicking too many times, but I think you have to go pretty mad for that to happen.

...and HGV. Mr. Green The theory questions differ, but the HP bit is the same.

don't take this as gospel as it's only my opinion but my approach to it was if I saw something, anything move I clicked. simples

Car and Motorcycle
Current pass mark - 44 out of 75
(questions) And I got 44 Shocked Even tho I have been riding for 6 years now.

HP is 44 out of 75 is about the amount to pass ( I beleive) and I got 70 - That was clicking what you deem to be a hazard, the hazzard itself, then after the hazzard (what i did) I think its fairly hard to fail on the HP test. Just dont heavy click Thumbs Up

You have 1 major area per clip.

You have 14 clicks as an absolute maximum.

They do catch you out by giving you a little hazard (pedestrian near a zebra crossing) but they will have a car reverse into your path 10 seconds later Laughing So keep your eyes peeled for more than 1 per clip.

Max score per clip is 5, if you click when you see the hazard, when it changes and when its finished you'll be fine... mainly when you see it. The faster yo do it the better as the points get less. 5>4>3>2>1 in the space of 3-5 seconds.

Have it on the PC currently, I haven't reviewed it a lot, had it for a mate to practice and I can score fairly high just clicking when it looks dodgy.

Hazard Perception part is the exact same rubbish as they give you in the car theory test.

As said above, give yourself some safety clicks. On my practise tests I often round myself clicking too early for clips; a safety click may not give you the full 5 points, but if you've clicked too early then at least you'll get some.

Just think: Just lookout for things that are going to cause you to change direction or slow down and then click for them and you should be fine.

Sadly, yes. I found that I was clicking way too early in the practice clips. It's essentially an exercise in waiting until the pencil pushing prat who created the test has decided that a learner should brick themselves after spotting a van or cyclopath pulling out on them.

And yes, it's the same clips. You'll find yourself willing the camera vehicle to position itself properly to see / be seen / avoid the hazard.

But it's not actually that hard, you just have to treat it as a game.

Thanks guys.

Think I'll just have to practice a few, and make sure I'm clicking in the right places.

Be gutted if I fell at the first hurdle and didn't pass the theory because of stupid software!!

I have been driving for over 10 years & now i'm goin the DAS route i will have to face this test. i recently had a go on a CD thing to have a practice & was terrible at it. because i was clicking too early

It's not doing anything for my confidence Sad

The advice I was given was to click when you first see it, then click again quickly after it. I have passed two HP tests with high marks (bike and HGV). Don't forget that there's one clip with two hazards,so don't just switch off after you have nailed one.

Oh, sure, I went for "click (elephant) click (elephant) click" on most hazards and got a decent score. It's a bit of a joke that you have to do that though. Mad

Fumps - I'm in the same position as you mate. I'm not worried about spotting the hazards, just when to register the click. I think the only answer is to practice, practice, practice!

Edit - Just done 2 practice clips online and got full marks for both, maybe I'm worrying un-necessarily?

As has been said, just do some practice clips. I've been driving 14 years (damn I am gettin on a bit) and did it last year no probs... after plenty of practice. It is unnatural and the road positioning will be all wrong. It just feels a little less wrong with practice.

Yeah, I think I'm worrying unnecessarily. Luckily haven't had any problems with the practice ones I've done, so just been online and booked up the Theory test for 13th Dec, first step towards the full licence!

The hazard perception test penalises quick reactions. I think that you have to treat it as a game for under 5's as it's so bloody stupid. For example, you see a bus in the distance put on it's indicator to pull out, so you think, "ah, a hazard approaching, better be prepared" (click) - WRONG - you have to wait until the bus starts pulling out before you click, like "oh, there's a bus about to carve me up" It's just not like real life.

Some of the test dvd's are actually much better than the DVLA rubbish as they work in "real time" whereas the test dvd seems so slow. However, don't be at all anxious about it as it is pretty obvious after the first clip that it's so simple. Thumbs Up

It makes you wonder who comes up with this utter tripe to begin with only then to be surrounded by spineless jessies that dont have the balls to say 'Dude, thats a shit idea!'

Hmmm, I don't remember seeing those elephants tbh. I think I was paying attention too, trouble is they're more unpredictable than your avarage hazard; you can never tell what they're gonna do.

Hmmm, I found this older hazard perception vid, must be from way back when Britain had colonies all over the world....

The elephant doesn't seem THAT hazardous though. Confused

Just a quick update & wanted to say thanks for the help and advice from this thread.

Had my theory this morning and scored 48/50 on the questions and then 59/75 on the hazard perception part.

Glad I passed but really didnt like the hazard part, seemed pretty inconsistant as to where you should click. Anyway thats the easy bits done, will be shortly putting in for the Mod 1 once I've got a bit more road practice and the weather brightens up!

Thanks,
Rich

I did this on my two HP's (car and bike). Click once when you see a potential hazard, again when it develops into an hazard and again when you must take action.

Although on my car HP I failed one clip for clicking too many times Embarassed
