Does anyone have any advice on buying stolen recovered bikes,as in what pitfalls there are.
Like how would it affect your insurance,etc..
Also how would you treat a person selling a stolen recovered bike with no v5 ?

Advice please Wink

Thanks
Richard

As long as it actually stolen recovered and being sold by the legal owner then there is no probably that you might encounter different to normal bike buying. It could well have damage from it being nicked and started, might have general damage from being nicked and used. Do an HPI check on it to be sure it's all okay. Someone sayings it's stolen recovered (ie, ignition is hot wired or similar) but they don't have the V5 I'd walk away as it's more than likely they've nicked it and are trying to flog it, so tell them if they want to see it apply for a V5 (form V62 from any post office) and could well be tempted to report it to the police as it is very very dodgy really.

As Ste said if you like what you see go see it before the end and get it HPI'd, take a mechanic if you can to gauge a general run condition. Guy in the pic looks a bit shifty tho Razz , lol Wink

Just keep your guard about you Thumbs Up

Oops, just saw 1 hour to go(only a 1 day listing???) Confused , not ideal but now its your choice, tell the guy that on the basis that you win the auction you can HPI it and then if thats all clear you will proceed with sale, if not you have the right to pull out Thumbs Up

Ask him why it doesn't have a V5, I'd want it to actually have a V5, wouldn't really be even slightly interested in any excuses he might come back with like "I imported it and it doesn't have one yet", no V5 walk away.

What i'm going to do is wait till pay day at the end of the month and give the guy an email to see if he's still got it, and haggle him down to £200 if everything seems fine with it. Confused
Plus its not that far from me.

It's still spending £200 on a bike which propbably can't be used on the roads, and if you apply for a V5 for it then there is a good chance they'll turn around and send the police to take it and arrest you for handling stolen goods. Just ask him why he doesn't have a V5, a V5 is a normal thing to have in this country for any road going vehicle, and the main reason why a vehicle doesn't have one is because it's stolen. And if it seems such a good deal because no one else has bid on it (and it would be a good deal if it had a V5) think why no one else has bid on it, over 100 people have looked at the eBay advert, but everyone else has considered it not a good buy probably because of the fact it doesn't have a V5. Generally speaking for road going vehicles no V5, you just walk and don't consider it. Thumbs Down
