Let's get one thing clear from the off: Yes, I am stupid (pigheaded) Tut Tut

I knew last week that it was bent, at the very least, and it became apparent after that, that there was a crack. It was the result of a stupid ignorant stupid blind stupid Evil or Very Mad bitch Evil or Very Mad reversing into the bike and knocking it over, without leaving details or a contact phone number (does this count as a hit and run?). I ordered a new handlebar the very next day and prayed it would turn up before the whole mess sheared off.

So anyway: I managed three intrepid commutes (2 x 11 miles) before it wibbled at me tonight as I left Chelsea, and gave up the ghost JUST as I turned off the A13, finally shearing right off half a block before my street.

I have only what must be five-blob gold karma with Him Upstairs to thank for the fact that it got me almost all the way home ... whence I paddled my way woefully round the corner and into my parking space. Mr. Green Thumbs Up

*The new handlebar arrived today in the post. The next door neighbour brought it round five minutes after I stumbled in the front door.

Only thing stopping me from riding it is that the Beefcake is suffering with Manflu and isn't here to put it on for me.

Probably they would nick me for having a dangerous vehicle on the road? If there had been anything left of me to nick Shocked

OK ... but I've now had to have a joint to recover.

My delayed response to how it felt when they came off at 5mph (mildly scary) became somewhat more severe when I realised what might have happened had it happened whilst I was barrelling along the A13, even at my usually sedate average speed of between 25-40 mph.

I would almost certainly be brown bread.

Addendum to my original post:
I am extremely very stupid, as well as a bad mother, girlfriend, daughter, sister, and dog-and-cat-mother - and not at all a bad-ass mofo.

I am a stupid-ass mofo, instead.

Lucky Fucker! I always have 'mechanical failure' in my head as a thing that might one day cause an issue, i sure hope to fuck that doesn't involve me holding a handlebar and throttle not attached to the bike!

A real biker would have bodged it back on with cable ties, chewing gum and gaffer tape! Razz

Virus would have wedged a broom handle in and carried on riding!

Mechanical failure is one of the things I vaguely "worry" about. Only just got my road confidence back about two years ago, so I'm still usually such an old biddy about "what might go wrong", that I ride fairly gingerly anyway. Besides which, I am crap at maintenance and have no idea which part is likely to go next, at any given time.

See, I thought about gaffer tape, when I first noticed the crack.

But I know myself too well, and AT THE TIME I thought if I gaffered it up, or ratted it in any way shape or form, I would never get round to buying a new handlebar, let alone fixing it.

Luckily I have a wonderful boyfriend who immediately trawled eBay for me, and found one for me to buy. When he gets over his manflu, he has already said he will put it on for me tomorrow (hopefully).

So that's the bus/tube and at least a chance to get stuck into a decent book for a change, for me tomorrow.

It wasn't as solid as "usual" when I came down there, else the bar would prolly have snapped off somewhere over the Canning Town flyover*, I reckon.

Me too, hate it when its chocablock as it gets quite tight in spots when filtering due to cars squeezing together to block bikes, think they do it as a game to keep themselves occupied whilst crawling along. My son caught up with me on the way home from work tonight so I followed him to give him some pointers on road positioning etc for his test, was well impressed with his riding, apart from a couple of times I thought he should of been a bit slower, unless its me being a doddery old git!
