If you believe the press, it will not be compulsory, but it is being seen as an effort to reduce the apppaling standard of Motorway driving.
I assume if it is going to be available for cars, then motorcyclists should be allowed on as well.

Suddenly passing your test doesn't make you a riding god though. Obviously however, there's no way you could chuck a moped on a motorway. ____________________ Journalist, student, egotist.

Have never found a problem with being on Duals (and NI's motorways are just Dual carriageways bar like a mile stretch at yorkgate), Never had a problem coasting along at 65/45
Perfectly safe as long as you keep your wits about you and accept the fact that you're on a 125, you're doing max 65 and you're not going to be doing lots of overtaking! |

Motorways are, in general, safer than NSL Dual Carraigeways so I never understood the reasons for not allowing learners on. Unless it's because learners are all pathetic and would hold everyone up with their dicking around feeding the steering etc.....

To be fair if it improves the standard of driving then happy days. This assumes the instructors know how to use the motorways.
They'll only be dicing with the lorries on the inside lane so meh. ____________________ My Flickr |

Then instructors with poor judgement will die along with their incompetent charges, and the rest of us can have cake to celebrate. It's so delicious and moist.

This is what the overtaking lanes are for If everyone used them properly there wouldnt be clogging up or traffic jams. |
... which is more likely to happen if you've actually been taught how to drive/ride on the motorway. Since nobody up to now has even had that option (prior to passing), it should improve the situation for everyone.
Aside, what's up with Mike Penning? Why does he keep coming up with reasonable, common sense improvements to driver/rider training/tests - it's almost as though he's actually interested in "Road Safety".
Yes, I'm seriously man-crushing. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I don't get what the big deal is. It's just like a duel carriageway tbh. If your bike can do speeds of about 50 then It's all good. |

I like it. I'll send Mr Penning my CV with a link to my other (slightly related) post
If it does nothing else but teach people which lane they should be in then it'll be worth it. ____________________ Just getting started |
