Riding home tonight on the carriageways, hands got so cold on a 30 mile journey I coulda cried. Laughing

Anyone know what's best to use? Heated grips? Handguards? combination of both?

I'm open to ideas for now. I ride a gs500 if it helps...

Very Happy

My heated grips kept my hands toasty on my way to work this morning, and I only wear summer gloves Thumbs Up
Though when the weather gets a few degrees worse I may use some glove liner types

Heated grips, hand guards plus fleece liners under normal gloves. Mind you, I only had heated grips in recent years, the rest of the time I just manned up. Wink Thumbs Up

You need to keep your core body temperature up. Aim to be wearing enough clothes so that if walking you break into a bit of a sweat. Many bike jackets have a removeable liner, you can sandwich more layers between the outer and the removeable liner, for added convenience. I've currently got 3 liners effectively, and because they are quite thin but effective they dont add bulk.

Body warmers are good for warming without making arms restricted.
down jackets and body warmers are good but a little pricey.

Basically layer up, and bar muffs, but mostly layer up.

Also aldi have some woollen merino wool thermal underwear which is warm without adding bulk.

Also ski trousers worn over motorbike trousers are ace. Warm and waterproof.

Layering up also goes for your hands and feet, more than one pair of socks and woollen gloves under your normal gloves.

Tucano Urbano bar muffs - massively better than hand guards.
Then add heated grips if hands are still cold. I like symtec ones because they don't make the grips any bigger.

The urbano's are, indeed, win. You have to get used to mashing the indicator switchgear through the neoprene, otherwise fantastic.

There are solutions, but more effective solution = more money. The best effect for the lowest cost is handlebar muffs. The biggest problem you face is wind chill, these combat wind chill very effectively. Do a search on here for them, there are a few threads with posts from people that know a lot more about them.

As for handguards, like MX style things, they will do very little to stop the wind which will simply go around them! Heated grips might help to an extent but the problem is they heat the bottom, and your hands are freezing from the top. Heated motorbike gloves would work, but then you are talking a fair wad of money for a decent pair that work well.

yeah cheers. Didnt really want bar muffs. I'll have to try layering up more! I was wearing thermals and a thin jumper underneath but I'll try and put more stuff on! Cool Hopefully it'll shift the heat to my hands. Thumbs Up

I tried under gloves and found them to be terrible. the only advantage is they kept my hands warm while i put the bike out/in the garrage. For a couple of quid id say try them as they help a slight bit.

Whats all this "manning up" everyone is talking about.

Riding when your hands are going numb is plain dangerous. MTFU is not advice. Rolling Eyes

I’m 100% with the Tucano Urbano posse.

Been using the neoprene ones on my daily 60 mile round trip with the thinnest of ventilated summer gloves with great success. Warm, dry, comfortable.

I had a two day test ride on a CBF1000 with heated grips a few weeks ago and they were relatively effective, but not up to the standard of the muffs. The heated grips make the grips too fat for my liking. You’d probably acclimatise to it, but I felt it detracted from my control of the machine. The ability to use thin summer gloves with the muffs is full of win for me. I always hated the lack of feeling from fat, bulky winter gloves and, despite spending a fortune on them, never found a pair that was any use once the temperature approached freezing.

Maybe thin, Gore-Tex lined heated gloves would hit the spot, but unless someone makes them and charges under £40 I’ll be sticking to with the muffs.

This point of view is where the MTFU statements need to be directed! I’ll keep my homosexual muffs while you vain, image obsessed “men”go home and cry about your cold little pinkies. Jesus wept!

In order of priority:

Cheapo £5 heated grips from china-ebay.

Some hand guards

Muffs although there are downsides with these. Awkward for controls and can push on the brake lever.

I only do 10 miles each way to/from work now.
Last night I noticed a big differnce with the temp.
Frozen hands getting home. As im still in 'summer gloves' I put a couple of 'petty garage plastic gloves' underneath mine - dose help.
Im stingy tho Laughing

Does not compute.

Good winter gloves (I use A* tech roads) and bar muffs. They look terrible but nothing beats them. They keep your hands warm, dry and remove all wind chill. The fur ones are meant to be the dog's, but I've not tried them.

As much as I'm a tart, after using muffs I've not found anything that has such a dramatic effect on keeping your hands warm.
