Thinking of trying 98 octane fuel out in the Mito, is it worth it? any up/downsides?

pro - err
con - costs more

waste of time running any car/bike on super/optimax etc.. unless its actually tuned to run on it. some people say 'oh it runs better' etc.. but its mostly just in their head.

on a modern car/bike the ecu adjusts to counter any change so its just a waste of money. on an old one you wont see any benefits unless you tune it to match.

on the flip side if it is tuned for 98 then thats what you should use.

my mate does this. always puts super in his bike. i've only ever put normal and the difference? his pocket is emptier than mine.

i asked the same question maybe just fill the tank once a mouth with the high octane will keep the engine clean (or what ever) but no point just using it all the time only thing you will notice is a hole in your wallet.

Hi

Cagiva specify 98-100 octane fuel anyway. So using normal unleaded puts you at a risk of holing a piston.

Higher octane fuel alone will not give you any more power.

This might give you a bit more info:-

Actually carbbed will make a slight difference, it is fuel injection that wont care unless it is mapped to run on it, but the difference is not something you would actually notice on a bike.

However if your vehicle is designed to run on it and you have been running cheaper stuff with lower octance, chancing a hole in the piston or power being turned down (per se) by the ECU due to increased knock.

I always run my bikes on Vpower, but my bikes have always been set up on a dyno and tuned to run on Vpower, also it means I earn double points as I am in the Vpower club Embarassed Embarassed

Carbed engine by default likely has nothing to take any advantage of higher octane fuel so won't gain anything.

To take any advantage of it you need a knock sensor. While there is nothing to prevent the ignition system on a vehicle with carbs from having a knock sensor it is pretty unlikely. With a fuel injected engine it probably has the ignition and injection integrated in a rather more sophisticated unit with more chance of a knock sensor being used (but still very rare on bikes).

Only exception to this would be the cleaning additives, with a fuel injected engine with a lambda probe being able to compensate for wear / slightly blocked injectors while a carbed engine can't do this. But those cleaning additives are independent of the octane rating of the fuel.

All the best

The Rotary Splint, duh, I thought everyone knew that Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Mr. Green Mr. Green Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

To be honest I haven't mucked about with carbs in ages, but I know my old VW wouldn't run on certain lower grade fuels, and would hit a whopping 85mph on the speedo as opposed to the 78ish when on regular, but then again that engine did have similar MPG in fuel and oil Thinking Thinking
