This is how my Tomos story began...

One night I'm sat up looking for another weird moped project... And I come across a tomos for sale 130 mile away... 150 quid, good runner...

So, I pressed the buy it now, and went to collect it... here's what she looked like... https://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/305389_10150424811571351_523851350_10799782_1249505484_n.jpg

Then the bloke offered me another one in spares for £40... so I snatched it off him and away we went in the van...

https://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/293486_10150390390096351_523851350_10590933_1508105490_n.jpg

The silver one flew straight through the MOT and was immediately taxed and insured... then had the intake and exhaust baffles ripped out... so she went a little something like this...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBMjNDjDkCU

I decided the bike was NOT quick enough and promptly ordered an expansion chamber...

https://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/313047_10150415255516351_523851350_10738891_526420690_n.jpg

But this STILL was not fast enough... so I ordered a reed valve conversion, a 65cc bore kit with 7 ports, a high compression head, bigger inlet manifold and bigger carb... and here is how she stands today, awaiting a new throttle cable and air filter... https://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/299080_10150424789361351_523851350_10799700_1734903678_n.jpg

And the story shall continue Very Happy

I have 'fond' memories of riding a borrowed Tomos into a hedge when I was 17.

Back in the Eighties, I had as a customer, a motorcycle shop in Kendal as a customer, they hired out Tomos mopeds on a daily, weekend or weekly basis, the idea being to tour the Lake District.
Apparently a chap hired one for, I think four days and when he returned it, he was asked how it had been and where had he gone, and he answered Leicester!! The mileage confirmed it.

Of course I'm quirky Wink

Yes the expansion chamber is designed for the Tomos =P it's a very spread out pipe though with no real 2 stroke "hit" to it although i can feel minor improvements all over the rev range with it...

Cant wait to take it out for a run with all this stuff on it! Very Happy

Right, I finally got the bike running well, then it turns out some debris left in the crank case (by my beloved friend who snapped a piston ring during fitting and didnt tell me) ruined 60% of the engine internals.

It did however achieve a respectable 53mph on the flat.

She is currently being rebuilt with a Full Circle crankshaft, another cylinder kit and Hi-compression head, A better expansion chamber, a new intake manifold to allow me to use my newly purchased Delly PHBG 19mm carb. Also to be fitted are some cafe bars, a long seat and some passenger footpegs.

More weight has been lost by removing the metal side panels and their mounts... full weight of the bike is now a sylph-like 42kg (With a full tank).

Also, next week I shall hopefully be ordering a HPI internal rotor ignition kit to ditch the old points system and to convert to 12v lighting.

According to reviews, the HPI kit shaves so much weight off the reciprocating mass of the engine so throttle response is dramatically improved. On the downside, it makes the bike eat clutches like gordon brown eats bran-flakes.

Fair play to you dude!
Massive waste of money, but your not doing it to sell i would guess, and that it's more a case of lets have some fun with a nice simple little project and throw a few £££ at it for fun!

With that in mind i think it's an awesome little project and these trad style lightweight mopeds have a certain coolness about them, mainly because they are not a plastic covered race rep style machine the size of a 125, with expensive spec and overkill brakes, tyres and technology.

Id say your Tomos would be a much cooler and more fun machine than a tuned Alitalia Aprilia RS50 etc, as it's really not trying to be something it isn't and it might just suprise a few people when it's done too!

Lastly i've been there myself in the past with a similar project and spent £600 on a 100cc scooter for a laugh, when i had a ZX6R to ride at the time as well. I made a Speedfight 100 go from a std 55mph, to a true 68-70mph, and had lots of fun with it, but also ruined the reliability, and the rideability of it too!

Worst moment was when a kid on a Piaggio MC3 LC kept up with me to 45mph, and all he had was an aftermarket pipe and lighter rollers. My speedfight had a std but lightened clutch (nothing else was available) and couldn't get into the powerband before about 20mph, so i was still nearly wasted by a 50cc, oh the shame!

Youch my friend... I feel your pain as my GN250 got blasted on the motorway by a tuned Piaggio ZIP SP...

I've already surprised a few people, one of which being a YBR 125 that it kept on par with till about 45... eventually I had him on tight town twisties Very Happy He wouldnt stop checking his mirrors and I think the pressure got to him as he took a corner way too fast and messed up his line....

All this was with just the cylinder kit, a 12mm carb, hi-comp head, and a Tecno Bullet expansion chamber... Lots of things are changing on this bike atm Wink

Nice work on the motor ! Keep the updates coming !

53mph out of it already is amazing! Can you double the standard 30mph to get 60 ?

Would love to see the look on peoples faces when they get burnt up by a little Tomos "50". Priceless!

Slowly getting there... Since this pic I have removed the centrestand, changed the exhaust, fitted a sidestand, removed the speedo, horn and front footpegs and re-routed a few cables.

Still need to split the cases, impact ratchet anyone?

Right, a few months down the line and I still cant get the clutch off the spare engine, not for love nor money, Tried heat, drift, heat AND drift, Penetrating fluid, NOTHING will work. It's fully seized to the crank. So now I'm going to bite the bullet and strip the ummmm... catastrophically-blown-to-pieces engine... lol

So, an update on how she looks at the moment too I think Smile

I have a laptop now with webcam so I can update MUCH more regularly Very Happy

Well it doesnt run Razz

The setup when assembled will be

65cc bore kit with chamfered ports and port matching
Reed valve conversion
High compression head
Intake manifold to match new carb
19.5mm Dellorto PHBG
Full circle race crank
nearly 10kg of weight loss on the bike
Tecno Circuit exhaust (Wide powerband to compensate for lack of 2 gears...

I estimate this set-up to achieve about 60ish...

With old setup:
65cc kit, unmodified
High compression head
Tecno Bullet exhaust (Narrower powerband, left me out of puff between first and second)
Dellorto SHA 12mm carb.

With that I hit 53mph GPS.

No, just stripped off everything that wasnt needed for legality, then chopped off the bits that were attatched to them. Plus my cylinder kit is about a kilo lighter, my exhaust is also about 1-2kg lighter.
The side panels weighed a fair chunk too... as did centrestand and old bars

Right, so I removed the engine from the Tomos today and began stripping, Only to see the worst condition piston I have ever laid eyes on in person...

Good thing I have a replacement for the piston, cylinder, head and crank!
