I can't remember if I've asked this before or not but I'm looking to get into IT work. At the moment I'm looking for anything at all with any kind of pay, my only criteria is it has to be in London.

What I want to know is what kind of qualifications do I need? I have a business degree but no real IT qualifications.

Next question is what kind of jobs should I be looking at to start off with? Like I said I don't care if it's crappy work and pay, I just need something.

I've also been looking at contracting as well but I'm guessing I need some sort of qualification first.

Any advice appreciated

Don't they teach IT on a business degree?

IT is really just general computer usage... Word, maybe Excel ect, so as long as you can do it, you might be able to get away without a certificate ect. But, in this economic climate nothing will be easy, and they will be able to be very picky and offer very poor wages.

If you enjoy it now, then you will hate it when you start working in the IT industry.

Also, what do you like doing in IT ?

have a look on cwjobs.co.uk

That's fine Laughing

To be honest I can pick up a lot of stuff fairly quickly, I know all the basic stuff both software and hardware but I don't more specific things like scripting and programming.

I'll take a look on that site, are there any qualifications I should try and get?

Hi

IT covers a very wide range of tasks, plenty of which have very little overlap. For example you mention programming and scripting, but programming alone covers loads of different languages some of which are very weird and unrelated to others.

What kind of thing do you want to do?

All the best

Keith

IT is a terrible career choice, I should know I'm stuck in it.

If you insist find a specific area and specialise in it, Cisco VoIP is a good one. not many Cisco CCIE Voice certs in the world. good pay

I need something temporary as I have another career I'm working on but I won't see any money from it for at least a year while I rack up experience.

In IT I'm looking to do very basic stuff kind of like what the support guy would do at school. Connecting things up, trouble shooting, etc. Like I said I don't know anything too technical

As harsh as it sounds, but there are plenty of qualified and experienced people looking for jobs.

You are going to struggle to find work in an industry, in which you have no qualifications, experience, or knowledge in which to impress them.

Your only way in would really be to know somebody already in the industry.

School IT is basically systems admin which would cover Networking like security, file stores, perhaps some database management. The problem with school stuff is that most schools are only big enough to have a single IT guy, or they share one between schools so you won't get much / any training and will be dropped into the deep end.

I think of what most people call IT jobs as being one of two things, Computer science jobs and IT jobs. Comp sci jobs are usually software development, networking, systems admin, other jobs that have a cross over into an engineering discipline such as robotics, avionics, Artificial Intelligence, etc. These type of jobs would be unsuitable for someone with a business degree and would require you to start from square 1.
Generic IT jobs tend to be more like tech support jobs where you work in an IT department, or you add content onto content management systems, using office, using specialist in house software or do database entry & information systems sort of stuff. Increasingly this is just seen as an additional responsibility of other jobs due to increased computer literacy.
So essentially it boils down to two sub sectors, those jobs where you are creating computer technology or programs, and those where you are using them. I think the second type is more suited to both your expirence and the type of career you'll be heading for. I think learning to program will just be going back to square 1 and heading in a different direction, which will take a surprisingly long time.
So the types of jobs i'd expect you to be interested in wouldn't be advertised as an IT job, they'll be admin or business type jobs with implicit IT.

IT support is piece of piss. Bits of paper and qualifications aren't so important, you only need a fairly basic knowledge of IT (a little more than users). That will be picked up on in the interview.

What is far harder to find is someone that has sufficient social skills to be friendly, hold a conversation in English with no jargon, and look somewhere other than their shoes.

I don't care how many qualifications someone has when they're going for an entry level IT job, I want to know if they can deal with people. Far harder to deal with people than with computers.
