 |
|
I can't remember if I've asked this before or not but I'm looking to get into IT work. At the moment I'm looking for anything at all with any kind of pay, my only criteria is it has to be in London.
What I want to know is what kind of qualifications do I need? I have a business degree but no real IT qualifications.
Next question is what kind of jobs should I be looking at to start off with? Like I said I don't care if it's crappy work and pay, I just need something.
I've also been looking at contracting as well but I'm guessing I need some sort of qualification first.
Any advice appreciated ____________________ Bikes : 2006 CBR125R - 2004 Monster 620ie - 2004 ZX-6R B1H - 2005 Monster S2R 800 - 2011 Street Triple - 2009 Streetfighter 1098 - 2014 ZX-6R 636

I need something temporary as I have another career I'm working on but I won't see any money from it for at least a year while I rack up experience.
In IT I'm looking to do very basic stuff kind of like what the support guy would do at school. Connecting things up, trouble shooting, etc. Like I said I don't know anything too technical ____________________ Bikes : 2006 CBR125R - 2004 Monster 620ie - 2004 ZX-6R B1H - 2005 Monster S2R 800 - 2011 Street Triple - 2009 Streetfighter 1098 - 2014 ZX-6R 636

School IT is basically systems admin which would cover Networking like security, file stores, perhaps some database management. The problem with school stuff is that most schools are only big enough to have a single IT guy, or they share one between schools so you won't get much / any training and will be dropped into the deep end.
I think of what most people call IT jobs as being one of two things, Computer science jobs and IT jobs. Comp sci jobs are usually software development, networking, systems admin, other jobs that have a cross over into an engineering discipline such as robotics, avionics, Artificial Intelligence, etc. These type of jobs would be unsuitable for someone with a business degree and would require you to start from square 1.
Generic IT jobs tend to be more like tech support jobs where you work in an IT department, or you add content onto content management systems, using office, using specialist in house software or do database entry & information systems sort of stuff. Increasingly this is just seen as an additional responsibility of other jobs due to increased computer literacy.
So essentially it boils down to two sub sectors, those jobs where you are creating computer technology or programs, and those where you are using them. I think the second type is more suited to both your expirence and the type of career you'll be heading for. I think learning to program will just be going back to square 1 and heading in a different direction, which will take a surprisingly long time.
So the types of jobs i'd expect you to be interested in wouldn't be advertised as an IT job, they'll be admin or business type jobs with implicit IT. |
