I've had it on the ramp and neither have play. Hence why it's confusing me.
It doesn't sound like a wheel bearing.
CV Boots visually look fine - I'd just do the whole driveshaft - It's £39 quid delivered and minimal hassle, but I'd rather not do both! ____________________ You ain't a has been if you never was |

Due to the differential action the outside wheel has to turn faster than the inside wheel (Or visa versa) when cornering/driving around in a circle.
I would guess the joint with the higher speed when cornering will be the one making the noise.
So if it is noisy when turning left the rightside joint/shaft will be fastest.
Maybe a load of shite mind you.
I found this pish:

When i had a knocking I replaced the O/S wheel bearing, it didn't go away. but the noise was clearest/loudest when this part was under stress.
I then replaced the N/S one and still no good.
I replaced the O/S drive shaft and still no good.
Then I replaced the N/S shaft and it went away, like magic it went.
Because the vibration travelled and sounded off the opposing disc or whatever it duped me, but well in the end it got a full set of brand new parts.
Just be careful. ____________________ Roger wrote: Women don't get damp for clingy puppies. Get some better happy pills, hit the gym & buy a medallion the size of a dinner plate. Job done |

^^^ This
At 40 quid a throw, I'd just do both; the law of sod says whichever one you choose, it will be the other one and, at that price, it's just not worth the aggro. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

I had an AX and went through 3 in a year. IIRC you cant seperate the CV joint from the driveshaft so it all has to be replaced. ____________________ Eat well, poo hard

Thanks for the offer -
I've got everything I need I believe, I'll just do both at the same time. It's not that bad yet, just irritating.
Cambelt was done Monday, I'll do an oil and filter on Saturday, then driveshafts next payday.
It hasn't done mega miles at all (44k) but I'll probably change the gearbox oil anyway. ____________________ You ain't a has been if you never was |

I went to U Pull It, and found a car that had receipts for work done pre-MOT inc shafts and shockers so took them as replacements cost about £50 in the end.
The shafts are a 5min job:
Slacken wheel bearing nut.
Wheel off.
Undo bottom bracket bolt for the hub.
Unscrew wheel bearing nut.
Pull disc/shocker outwords so shaft can be pushed in a touch before it pops out and off.
Repeat for other side and slip new ones in, in reverse. |
Gearbox oil and seals while I'm at it? | Wouldn't bother; unless there's something clearly wrong looking at the oil on the shaft when it comes out..
Maybe not 5 but definitely not much like half an hour, my nuts aren't all seized up, they're in good working order.
Infact, fucing resentfully i'm starting the barstad clutch again tomorrow since daddy wants to look so il use my phone and video how long it takes to whip both out, from jacking up until both are on the ground? ____________________ Roger wrote: Women don't get damp for clingy puppies.
