Hi all well going home this morning from a night shift and well had some fun and being a bit silly thinking about it but after some very heavy braking from high speed a couple of times and the brake fade was unreal at one point it just give up.

Know i know that the very high temps you get when heave braking but why do the brakes go like that, what causes it. is it gasses between the pads and disk or is it something else Question

How old is your brake fluid?

Could be water in the brake fluid boiling off from the heat on the discs thus making them fade badly.

so as always google knows all

Green Fade
Green fade is the most common. It is the result of new brake pads being fitted. New brake pads need time to cure, a process which happens naturally through use, before they become fully effective. If they are not fully cured, they can release gases under the heat of intense braking and those gases form a cushion which reduces friction between the pad and the disc or drum.

Fading Due to Overheating
Brake pads are made of a complex mix of materials. One is a resin. Sustained heavy braking can cause the brakes to heat up so much that they melt the resin and the melted resin acts as a lubricant between the pad and the disc or drum which causes the brakes to slip.

Fluid Fade
Brake fluid is capable of absorbing water from the air. When water is absorbed, the boiling point of the fluid is lowered. If the boiling point of the fluid becomes too low, then heat from braking can cause it to boil. When the fluid boils a gas is released which remains in the tubes. When the brakes are pressed, instead of compressing the fluid, the gases are compressed and less power is applied to the brakes

I was running a machine control day earlier this year and we were doing emergency braking exercises from approx 100mph.

One of the guys had done a few runs when he came towards me again and started braking, as he passed me, still doing around 50mph, I noticed that the front brake lever was back to the bar Shocked

He continued past me, off the end of the runway and onto the grass some 20m or so.

The front discs were so hot the brake fluid had boiled. The fluid, along with his underpants, needed changing. Apparently all was ok the next day Smile

Hi

Fade is normally from heat, with fluid boiling or the pads overheating.

If you have changed the pads and replaced the fluid then they should be OK. But cheap pads might well not work that well, and low spec fluid might not work well either (and if you used DOT 5 fluid it won't absorb water to flush it out).

However dragging brakes (from sticking calipers) will likely heat the brakes up without using the brakes, and also keep them warm after braking hard.

All the best

Keith

Can anyone tell me the history of brake pads, like when we used our trainers on bmx tyres.

In less than 5000 words ??

I hate break fade. You just know that you're going to have to do some work again soon.

I always thought brake fade was to do with fluid heat causing the rubber brake lines to become more maleable therefore you had to squeeze through that movement. hence braided lines stopping the cable expanding and increasing braking pressure, although losing feel.

Always sounded feasible

Hi

Don't think so. The rubber isn't the bit that provides the strength anyway (there is some internal braiding, probably cotton).

All the best

I know exactly what you mean, the other day I had the worst break fade, sat in the canteen eating a twix, slightly dozing off, looking at the time when I realised that 12.35 my break was quickly fading back into work, without even noticing I moved from the canteen to my workbench, whilst eating said twix, and started playing with bits and bobs on my bench, at 1.30 I realised my break had faded very early back into work.

I was gutted.

Why oh why can't people spell BRAKE properly? Even in this thread the OP spells it wrongly break as in a coffee or tea break but spells braking properly in his first sentence!! Confused

Ok got it off my chest now and breathe, phew

Brake/Break/Braik fade/faid is caused by excessive use of the breaks/brakes/braiks.
During normal use there/their/they're will be no incidence of fade/faid.

Learn to look ahead and time/Thyme your gearchanges/geerchainges.
