Possibly a stupid question for someone, but I have never came across this term before....

I assume it is something electrical?

It's the bit of an electric motor/generator that doesn't turn - often identified by bunched loops of copper windings at either end.

In biking terms its an aleternator or generator.

I learned this term after binning my z earlier this year, i managed to chase the part using US websites where they used the term stator.

As opposed to the bit that spins called a "Rotor".

If you own a Sherco or a Beta or a Gas Gas then the stator is also known as a fuckinexpensive piece of unreliableshit that regularly fails and costs a fortune to repair.

Not completely correct.

There is also a Stator in a torque converter.

This does the very important job of re-directing the energy in the driven fluid back in the direction of flow to Increase torque.

As opposed to a fluid coupling which cannot multiply input torque.

The stator is also ratchet mounted to prevent drag.
