If you've got your insurance sorted, it will be on the online database used by the tax people.. They will also check the bike has MOT.
If you have both, you can do it online and get a few days grace with not showing the disc. I think however this only applies if you get the tax online before the first of the month, so you've got about an hour and a half...
EDIT. If it were me, I'd ride it home, and take the risk.. but that's a different point to the one you raised. ____________________ "I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me." Hunter S Thompson

Insured and MOT'd I would just take a punt and ride it home. If you are carrying all your docs and the receipt it would have to be a very miserable sod of a copper not to just let you on your way.
The biggest risk is that it might get impounded, but it's a very small one in the circumstances. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

A Cheque? No, not really
I would just ride it.
In fact, I did that for 35 miles after I bought my bike.
I had it insured, which is (imfo) the main thing and if you do get pulled well, you just argue the toss and say you can't buy it as there is no where open.
Sounds fair to me but probably not to the Police though
As above, you probably will not get a pull and can buy it as soon as it's open or whatever.
I didn't see it as a big deal but then, I never got stopped. ____________________ My Lane Position is always AWESOME!! |

i dont bother putting in a tax disk, too much of a pain to unscrew all the little bolts. it's not an endorse-able offence not displaying one, but it's bad not to have it.
a few years back when i got pulled over (small number plate), policeman was starting to look over the bike and i said to him before he got to it. he wasn't bothered as it showed as taxed on the camera. think my disk is still september 08 thats on the bike.
and so on ____________________ Sahf East Winnah 4LYF

Well more a mis-remembering than a myth, but I take your point..
Like boundy and Marjay say though, the disc will get sent to the registered keeper. However by taxing it online, it will still be taxed, so you are unlikely to get stopped. Is there anything to stop you getting a replacement disc when the bike is registered to you (given that 125 tax is only £15 a year) ? Or even heaven forfend, asking that the seller post the disc to you when they get it.
FWIW I haven't got a tax disc holder on my bike, so consequently haven't displayed for 2 years. I would therefore only get a bollocking for failure to display rather than being untaxed. ____________________ "I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me."
