Bit long this so I'll add the tl;dr bit at the bottom.

I've been seeing this girl for a couple of months now, pretty casual which we both agreed was what we wanted when we started out so like once a week but text everyday etc. It was kind of getting to a point in the last few weeks where I felt it had come to it's natural end but didn't want to/know how to end it with her. Went to a New Years party which she was also at, was chatting to her through the night but she knew a lot more people there than I did so I left her to chat to her friends and I chatted with my housemates. Anyway got to about midnight and looking around for her to give her a kiss (gay cliche I know) couldn't find her, so I kissed the first girl I could find, meant nothing I didn't even know her name. Sod's law she saw everything went on a mad one and ran out the house, I end up on the streets of South East London looking for her, find her running in between traffic so I get her to the side of the road and call a taxi for her to get home, she punches me so I restrain her (held her by her shoulders against a wall) Joe public who are driving past giving me shit one guy stops and gets out and I let her go to explain to him what's what. Turn round and she has done a runner, I follow her but a bus passes me and I 'assume' that she had got on it to get back home. I go back to the party.
About twenty minutes later some guy comes up to me and casually mentions there's a big gang of lads outside that found her and now want to smash my head in. I go out there to see what is what, realise this big group are scum of the earth youths with knives etc, one of them takes interest in me, I talk it out with him (suprisingly he understands and we come to an agreement to get her home), this is where my brain isn't thinking I give them £70 to get her home (god knows what I was thinking) and then think no more of it. Ten minutes later I go upstairs and she's sat on the bed, I go mental at her for bringing these thugs to the party who have just fleeced me of £70, it all gets heated and I get asked to leave which I do. Make my way back home and sleep it off.

Next day my housemates come back, turns out my best mate I've grown up with went off on one at her afterwards as she has been gossiping behind his back and the girl he is seeings back and goes at her pretty hard apparently.
Anyway don't hear from her all day yesterday, I'm constantly wanting to text her, contact her to make sure she is alright (my pride gets in the way) She texts me around ten a blank message, so I reply assuming she wants to talk. Forty minutes pass and shes sends me "you don't know the damage you've caused, tell my parents I love them very much" at this point I'm 50/50 as to her seriousness, I call her housemate and find out that she is alone and that she also text her earlier saying she was sorry. Start to panic and ride over there, the housemate calls the old bill, I pull up to an ambulance and two cop cars. Turns out she has necked two bottles of wine and a load of paracetamol pills. Cue instant guilt, and her friend going mental at me, I'm in too much of a shock to actually do or say anything. Ask her mate to text me to let me know she is ok, which she doesn't even do until like a hour ago, it's not even a 'shes ok' text it's just like 'you're no longer part of this don't ever talk to me or her again' so I've assumed from that she is ok.

I've been up all night feeling like this is all my fault, regardless of the fact that it is a tad over reaction on her part, it doesn't take away from the fact that she did it. I can't get out my head that there would of been something I could of done, if I'd text her yesterday or something, or even got there sooner she wouldn't have done it. She is literally the nicest, sweetest girl in the world and me being a bloke have not treated anywhere near as good as I should of done and then the kiss on new year set her off followed by both me and my mate laying in to her. I know the damage is done and I'm best to stay away but I'm a mess at the thought that my actions have nearly killed someone I do care about.

TL;DR : Seeing a girl casually for a few months, she sees me kiss another girl on new year, we argue. She takes an overdose last night, luckily got her to hospital in time. Racked with guilt.

She's 19 by the way, and I'm 22.

Fuck that mate.

Not your fault.

It all rings bells for me in a past relationship, although it wasn't that far gone. But honestly, please dont beat yourself up. Its her mentality thats in the wrong, and better you know now than later.

Also, perfect time to cut all ties with her. Youre the same age as me, shouldn't have this type of worry over your head. Meet someone new. Thumbs Up

She obviously has a screw loose.

However, this is the issue with casual relationships. You may not have liked her that much, but chances are that she got quite attached.

No time for a long reply, but basically sounds like she's a fucking head case, and if it weren't you it would have been the next sucker, that description is crawling with psychological blackmail, she would love you to feel responsible for what she's done to herself, but thats how manipulative bitches work. I would literally walk off with a whistle. Anyone who is fucking retarded enough to attempt suicide by paracetamol isn't worth the time of day anyway.

She may have done 19 circles around the sun, but mentally she's still stamping her feet because she can't have a lolly.

I wouldn't feel too hard up about it, I know its hard not to though.

I very much doubt that she really wanted to end it, the fact she texted you and others. If she really wanted to kill herself she would have.

I would wait a few days and give her a call/text just to see how she is and maybe see if she wants to meet for a coffee or something to talk about it? Both seems that you had different ideas on what you wanted.

Maybe someone else will say different, but thats what I think anyway.

Don't beat yourself up mate, I went out with a girl like this a few years ago and her guilt trips nearly drove me to destruction. Walk away with your head held high and put it behind you as a bad experience

If shed meant to do it she wouldnt have texted you or anyone else, tell her to take a hike and move on, I want to punch people in the face when they try this emotional head trip out to make someone feel guilty.

From the rest of your post, you all sound a bit immature, thank fuck im middle aged, couldnt be doing with this kind of shit. I tend to fuck people off who play mind games of any description.

When she has her next period, cut all contact. She'll have no excuse to pull the "it's yours" gig that often accompanies psychos. Shame about the 70 quid, though.

Sounds like a good night out to me. She seems like several different types of crazy to me. Put her on ignore.

To be fair, I think you should have come clean with her as soon as you felt the relationship was drawing to a close. There are no "right" words to say in that situation but honesty would have been the better option. However her mate has given you a way out of this situation so grasp it! Let her get better with the help of her familiy and friends then perhaps persue a friendship/relationship at a later date if you still care about her.

This is absolutely not your fault.

I would actually hazard a guess she didn't go over the recommended dose, otherwise her friend wouldn't have texted "don't speak to me or her again", on account that he wouldn't be able to talk to her again, as agonizing organ failure leading to eventual death tends to dull any form of conversation.

The PODs I usually come into contact with can take up to a fortnight to die from the overdose and some take 3-5 days to experience symptoms post overdose. Taking a paracetamol overdose is by no means a quick and easy option.

Hence my question.

Do you have any figures for the success rate of suicides per 100 attempts for:

A/ Drinking and taking some tablets.
B/ Standing in front of a train.

Was talking about this with friends a few nights back - general feeling was "anyone who takes tablets and drinks isn't trying to kill themselves"

As Big Ham says, plenty of times people go out and get smashed, then go home and take half a box of neurofen to try to prevent the following mornings hangover.

Cheers guys I really appreciate the responses from all of you.
The fact is I do still care about her but as I said at the start I just felt like it was coming to an end anyway. Her doing this has flipped my head in to thinking maybe I was should of taken more care of her and not left her alone yesterday but never in a million years did I see this coming.

I dropped her a text this afternoon just to let her know that I was going to keep my distance and stuff and that I hoped she was ok although to be fair I imagine her whole support system is banning her from contacting me and I imagine on a clear (albeit heavily hungover) head she is probably slightly embarrassed.
Considering she kissed another guy a month or so back on a night out and I didn't even mind when she told me makes her reaction to me doing the same seem so extreme. Also some heavy rumors have reached me that she slept with someone else a month ago too, but as I know it's just casual it doesn't bother me although she flat out denies it and I can't imagine her doing it. So maybe there is a heavy sense of guilt on her part that lead to this.

I can't shake the image of her all alone crying her eyes out and deciding to take the pills, I'm not sure if she believed it would work or not, I never will. I'm still stuck with the sense of guilt that there was something I could have done to prevent it.

I'm not sure, the police woman that chatted to me at her house said 'she had a good crack at it' which I've taken to meaning she took a fair few and it could have potentially worked, I have read you need to take at least 30 and even then it takes days for your liver to pack up. She wasn't blue lighted in the ambulance so I took that as a good sign.

Standing in front of a train, whilst I know is just an example, is something I feel very strongly about. If you jump in front of a train, whilst having very high success rate, you're screwing up the life of the train driver, costing the UK economy loads of money in people that are late for work and needlessly attention whoring. What happened to the good old toaster in the bath?

Yeh I used it as an example as I work on the railways and therefore speak to transport police, drivers and ops managers who have to deal with it. Not something I have had to deal with myself though, luckily Confused

Nope, I only ever see the ones who take enough tablets/get found soon enough Smile

Did see one person who hopped in front of a train though, slipped and got struck a glancing blow, survived.

My point being that people who do the "cry for help" routine can get very very sick/dead from not understanding how dangerous even a little over the recommended dose of paracetamol is.

But that is enough of a tangent from the original post from me Smile

One last post. I've known people die/get extremely sick from taking 8-10 tablets
