I need to adjust my mirrorrs on my hornet but the stems have seized up and I cannot losen them off. I have tried soaking with WD40 and tapping them with a mallet but they will not release.

Anyone got any ideas?

When you say you tapped them with a mallet, do you mean you put a spanner on the base of the stem and tapped the spanner? One little hit should be enough to free them up.

Thats what I did sorry if it wasn't clear.... I can loosen the top nut but not the lower one that the stem goes into.

Did you use a rubber mallet or a steel mallet? Rubber mallets are very useful but a metal mallet or hammer will give more impact. The force should be more than enough to shock it free.

(edit)

I can't remember what the mirror stem actually looks like on the Hornet, I was assuming that it's got a hexagonal base so you can grip it with a spanner but I could be wrong.

Don't worry, I'm sure Teflon Mike will come along in a minute and say something like "pour some diet cola on it and it'll pop right out". He usually knows how to fix everything.

I did use a hammer on it but it won't budge. As for the mirror its a 2003 model which is similar to the one in picture apart from the miror being rectangular not round.

Have you got a bit of metal tubing around - like a metal table leg or something? You can use it as an extension bar on the spanner to give you more leverage but be careful not to snap the thread on the mirror stem or you'll have to mill it out.

Don't assume it's a normal thread. Some mirrors have left hand threads so when you think you're undoing it you're actually trying to tighten it.

Bit of WD perhaps? generally solves most stuck things.

If tapping doesn't work, try whacking it.

Could work Laughing

This sounds like the most likely explanation to me. Thumbs Up

This is the most likely scenario, usually the right hand mirror has a left hand thread, certainly was the case with older yamahas including my xs650.

IF all these methods fail you could always use my method which is using the spanner (correct size) grab hold at the bottom, then give the spanner a knock using a mallet/hammer with your other hand.

Best finding which way they tighten first though otherwise you can break the socket.
