Did you use a rubber mallet or a steel mallet? Rubber mallets are very useful but a metal mallet or hammer will give more impact. The force should be more than enough to shock it free.
(edit)
I can't remember what the mirror stem actually looks like on the Hornet, I was assuming that it's got a hexagonal base so you can grip it with a spanner but I could be wrong.
Don't worry, I'm sure Teflon Mike will come along in a minute and say something like "pour some diet cola on it and it'll pop right out". He usually knows how to fix everything.

If tapping doesn't work, try whacking it.

IF all these methods fail you could always use my method which is using the spanner (correct size) grab hold at the bottom, then give the spanner a knock using a mallet/hammer with your other hand.
Best finding which way they tighten first though otherwise you can break the socket. ____________________ CB125>CG125>GN125>ER5>K100RS>R1100RS>K100RS
