PostPosted: 20:56 - 04 Jan 2012    Post subject: Got my test tomorrow! Advice please Reply with quote

Hi all, passed my CBT a nearly two years ago for cheap transport.

I have always loved bikes and after buying a Kawasaki GPZ400R and rebuilding it from the ground up I have finally got round to doing my test... I did my theory earlier last year so its MOD1 tomorrow and MOD 2 on Friday.

I have not had much training at all and will be getting 4 hours training in the morning for MOD 1 and the same for MOD 2. But that is not much training, reason being funds are short at this time of year.

I am a confident and aware rider, always on my mirrors and paying full attention to the road and drivers around me. I have covered over 30K miles on three bikes over the past 2 years and cycled for years before that (another 25K miles +) anyway any tips pointers which could make the difference tomorrow?
Thanks in advance Very Happy

Good luck on the test tomorrow. My advice for the Mod 1 would be: Keep your feet well tucked in to avoid clipping a cone (especially on the swerve manoeuvre). Listen to everything the examiner tells you. Don't forget your observations at the beginning and end of every manoeuvre. Relax and enjoy it.

Thanks, the benefits of being a smoker, if it gets too much I can relax again quickly! Hopefully it will all go well Smile

These, plus be as prepared as possible. As long as you're confident with your bike handling (slow speed), you just need to make sure nerves don't get the better of you.

YouTube mod1 so you know what to expect, sit back, and have a beer (one!).

Remember observations before you move off (which feels weird in an empty car park), and take your time.

Are you on a 500cc bike for the mod 1? If so, for the speed trap manoevres, use 2nd gear only, do the corner at 20mph and gun it for the speed trap as soon as you can. Throttle off as you go through the trap, two quick countersteers and stop in the box.
Other than that, don't put a foot down on the slalom/figure 8 and trust the surface, it's brilliant so don't worry if its wet.
Now go and pass it. Good luck!

It helps to also be prepared for failure. If you fail, you'll be feeling pissed off but it doesn't really matter, it just means you've got to cough up another £75 to do the test again in a week or two.

I wouldn't even waste money on training, the pass rate is over 2/3 and that includes a lot of One Week Wonders. You'll be fine.

Good Luck.

I agree with the above. If you've been riding for 2years without problem then you should be fine. You're observations should be up to scratch, but just make sure you're making your shoulder checks routine while you're on your test.

I think the problems come when people try to rush their tests. If you're riding, then decide it's time to go for it, but it's not the (perceivable) end of the world, should you fail, then you're calm enough to do well, as long as you know what's expected of you and you're confident you can do them.

Again, good luck!

My motto: I passed my test. So can everyone else (passed 1 and 2 with no previous experience and 4 2-hour lessons). My mate passed his - and he's a complete idiot.

Only use 2nd gear for the swerve and emergency stop - the engine will help you with the breaking.

This video was my bible for Mod 1:

Hi all, thanks for the luck today was going really well but the test centre have cancelled all tests due to the high winds, apparently an instructor was nearly blown off his bike.. Been told they are going to try and re-schedule for tomorrow morning (6.15am!!) Got some practice in today which was good and also been told that I should have no trouble passing both tests Thumbs Up If they do re-schedule I may end up doing MOD 1 in the morning followed by MOD 2 in the afternoon! At least it gets it over and done with at long last, so 2 hours training later and they tell me I can pass, result in my opinion! Will let you all know how it goes.

Thought this was a good explanation as to why it was cancelled...

Ah well, there's a lot of it about. I'd prefer to do them on the same day, I'd have gone for it if I'd thought about it. There really is nothing hard in the Mod 1, it's just the Mod 2 that can catch you out with traffic or weird roads.

Remember the test starts from where your bike is parked. So remember mirror mirror shoulder check before you pull away. And if you have to stop when he opens the gates do the same again.Don't be afraid to ask the examiner to repeat or explain to you if you don't understand him............

And the very best of luck Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

EDIT: I'm a bit behind here lol
So good luck for both tests tomorow then Thumbs Up Very Happy Thumbs Up

Good luck ! If you have 2 years experience already on bikes your sorted, I got my 125 at end of October last year and passed my test at the start of March, took no training but passed with 0 minors on mod 1 and 3 on mod 2, not bad considering my mate who had training picked up more than me.

Tests have been moved to Wednesday and Thursday next week. As some of you may have heard my run around bike was stolen on Friday night so I am very glad I have the test soon so I can hopefully get the Kawasaki on the road Razz

I'd suggest that you're being evaluated from the first moment the examiner claps his eyes on you, so hi-vis up and yes-sir-no-sir until you have the bit of paper in your hand. Wink
