PostPosted: 18:14 - 05 Jan 2012    Post subject: confused about my reserve tank Reply with quote

I have a yamaha XJ600S Diversion 1998 and i filled it up to see how many miles i could get on a full tank (185 miles).
Then when i ran out of petrol i flipped the toggle to reserve tank and nothing happened, so i had a look in tank and it was empty and had to push it a mile to tesco luckily all on flat ground.

Any idea why my reserve doesnt work?

Maybe the reserve tank was removed by a previous owner?

Sorry.. bad attempt at humour

Maybe the switch is configured incorrectly, maybe ON is infact reserve by mistake?

I never dismantled the fuel tap on my Diversion to see the layout, but if it’s anything like the simple tap on an RXS100 the filter on the main inlet may have come off.

https://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd227/serendipity_uk/RXS100/IMGP7033.jpg

In this picture the longer filter tube had fallen out meaning that unfiltered fuel was passing into the tap regardless of tap position. In my case I noticed because my carb got blocked with specks of rust from the tank, but the effect would have been to fully drain the tank before reserve was even engaged.

Are you sure you had it the right way and it wasn't on reserve to start with.

Some taps can be ambiguous which way they are pointing.

Try it on what you think is reserve to start with and see if it works that way around.

Maybe carry a jerry can with you when it starts getting really low so you don't get caught out again.

Had the same with mine, the pipe in the tank had fallen out of the tap. It's a push fit. If you shine a torch into the empty tank you will see the pipe sticking out of the tap or you will see where the pipe should be. Tank off, tap off, tank upside down and shake till pipe falls out, reassemble and refit.
Hope that helps.

Oh dear......
Rolling Eyes Embarassed
XJ600 S

Has a reserve......

Well at least the one I rode for over 2 years did, as did the others in the owners club.....

My guess is the OP forgot to return to main tank after running on reserve.

94 divvy has reserve = up prime = middle towards ight, On is down.

No off position as its a vacum pump which only works with engine running after vacum is ceated hence why you can take tank off with tap turned on. 97 onwards had electic pumps fitted, unless your older model has had the electic pump mod done as they are notoriously bad starting if left to run dry with a vacum pump.

The tap on the Divvy is the same general arrangement as this - apart from the tap positions ofc.

The only way you'll find out is whipping it off and having a look. It's a very simple operation though. Seat off, disconnect fuel pipes (don't forget to take the black plastic bit off the tap - there's a screw inside - otherwise it'll break when you try and remove the tank), then 2 bolts to take tank off. It's just two bolts into the bottom of the tank.
