Should I rent ... from my mum?

Background: My mother and her other half will soon be selling their house, buying a flat, and disappearing to Europe. The flat will become a 'holiday home' in England and they will return every 3 months for an undefined period, to remain Brit citizens, etc.

An opportunity will exist for me to rent from them and for me to become a tenant. I should get 'mates rates' .

My position: at the moment, I am living with my father after a spell previous spell of living with mates, after uni, which led to spiralling debts etc., which I'm on top off ( I have 5 figure savings now)

But although I pay board atm, it's nearly half off what I would pay to rent from my mum/cover bills etc.

If I'm honest, I've got used to the easy ride of living with my father. Our paths hardly cross, due to contrasting work hours, and it does enable me to bank a lot of what I earn. So it's not really an imposition.

However, it does mean it's some times a pain meeting girls etc, as my father and I aren't "mates" - we're family in the strict sense of the word.

A part of thinks, stay put, and look toward banking more, with the goal in 4-5 years of taking on a mortgage. But, the other part thinks, you know what, I need my own space. Even though we tend to stay out of each other's way, I feel like I'm in my father's shadow, that it's his house and not mine.

So it's a choice between something that is financially cushdy but a bit of a pyschogical pain (not having my own digs) and something that will double my outgoings - relating to shelter, etc - but give me my own space.

I will get much more bang for my buck renting from my mum than a private person. But I'm not sure if I should be looking in the private sector to avoid any potential problems further down the line....

I would go for renting your mothers.

Might even go as far as to say if you would like to buy it that they consider your rent as payment towards the purchase price.

Bonus to them is they have someone renting who has a vested interest in the house and will ensure that it stays safe and well maintained.

Is she going to rent the flat to anybody else if you decline the offer?

You are doing HER a favour by house sitting, considering it wouldn't be yours for a quarter of the year. Good opportunity to get even lower rent plus more independace I say! Plus you could always go back to your dads for those three months...

Seems I have now been offered to rent the house (at flat prices), plus she'll pay the bulk of the council tax.

My old dear spends most of her time in france, living in the house she owns.
She also has a flat here in Liverpool city centre.

She has offered it to me and mine at a reduced rate.

I passed on it. Dont wanna get into the "my flat, my rules" bullshit that will inevitably happen. The fact that im 32 doesnt seem to register in my my old dears noggin.

In short. Bad idea. Dont do it. Get a gaff of ur own and/or share with a mate cos mums are fukin mental!
