 |
|
Last September, Suzuki ran a "£1 off per cc" offer. They're essentially doing it again for some of the models in their range until the end of April.
List prices have gone up a few %, but then you get from £600 to £1000 cashback, £1 deposit, 3%/4%/5% over 3/4/5 years on anything from this list: GSX-R1000, GSX-R750, GSX-R600, GSR750, GSX650F, Gladius 650, V-Strom 650, SV650, GSX1250FA.
At those prices, I could almost be tempted, although the cheapskate in me wonders what it'll do to used prices. How far and how fast will it knock on, and how badly will dealers get screwed on their current stock? Will they try and sit on it for 4 months, or will they suck it up and accept that prices are £600 or so down on everything?
And how will other manufactures respond? At the entry level, you're looking at just £4454 for the SV650. That's £1350 less than an ER-6n - heck it's less than a Ninja 250! - £1400 less than a CBF600N, or near as dammit £2000 less than the new XJ6. It's even a fair bit less than the Hyosung copies - why would you buy the Korean knock off?
Interesting times, let's see how it plays out. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Even if it did have the knock on effect you`re talking about, I still would`nt be able to find a 250 run-about ____________________ I am the sum total of my own existence, what went before makes me who I am now! |

Gixxer750 is a grand more than the 600, yet they are essentially the same bike. What's extra in the 750 that costs a grand? ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

I can only assume that Suzuki is betting the farm on shifting some stock, in the hope of making it back later in parts and servicing.

One month at the end of the season, they could tough it out. Four months, including all of April, that might be a different story, there will be a lot of "Yehbut, I could just go to Suzuki and..."
I'm pretty confident that there will be customers getting stabbed in dealers by the end of it, to screams of "Then! Why! Don't! You! Sod! Off! And! Buy! A! Gladius! Then!"
The danger for Suzuki is that they'll reduce the perceived value of their bikes in the long term - which is why they've done it as a "cashback" rather than a price reduction. It'll be a hard sell for dealers having to slap another £650 on the price of an SV650 on the first of May, although I suspect they'll all heave a sigh of relief when the promotion ends. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Amazing when you consider I bought my non-ABS (but with full panniers) Versys, brand new in August 2009 for £4500 |

Yup, workmate got a Bandit, currently priced at about £6400, for low £4K back then as well.
Eh, exchange rate, Angelina Jolie personally inflates the tyres on the new ones, leaves a bit of lipstick on the rims.
I half suspect that as volume of sales dropped, they've (all manufacturers) been cranking up the prices to try and maintain profits. Problem: nobody's got any money. Solution: more expensive bikes!
I couldn't see that ending well, which is why it's great to see Suzuki at least try to reverse it. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

The question is: Gixxer 750 or thou? Enquiries will have to be made.

"Cut price" R1s are still ridiculous though.
Local dealerships around me are offering brand new R1s at £13,800 OTR and touting it as a bargain! .
That's Ducati/Aprilia money for a heck of a lot less bike, hell, last year they were offering the new R1s with a full Akrapovic road system with twin carbon silencers plus some other goodies for just £12,400 OTR, so the price of them now is staggering.
No surprise I see absolutely no R1s at bike meets with new plates. ____________________ "Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul."
