I need to send my licence to the DVLA, not points or anything.

But simply what precautions should I take for this? Seeing that
the DVLA is filled with monkeys on peanuts?

I've read horror stories of bike cops losing their bike entitlements
or car entitlements.

I sure as hell don't want to lose any since I have the HGV things on them too and I only kept the motorbike test certificate pass .

Question

Make copies before you send it off, and get proof of postage AND make sure you know where your pass certificates are. Thumbs Up

EDIT-

Seeing this thread reminded my friend that he needs to change the address on his license, just been through the process online and DVLA site states that you cut you license in half and return it to them BEFORE you've received your new license. Surely this puts a worrying amount of faith in the DVLA not cocking it up. Laughing

Recorded is a waste of money when sending to the DVLA (since they don't sign for individual items), proof of postage is enough.

I'd request a new license due to 'losing' it before placing such faith in them Laughing

That costs money IIRC. Address change is free. Wink

I don't know if my friend will cut up his license or not, it's up to him (Although I'm sure he will like a good little sheep ). Wink

Hi

Photocopies are likely to be useless, unless you get someone official to certify them and then seal them away. DVLA will just claim they are tampered with.

Personally I would go along with the idea of ordering a replacement as your original has gone walkabout.

All the best

Keith

Frustratingly I suspect you're right, and the DVLA claim it's illegal to have two licenses.

This is what I did:

I wrote to the head of license categories (there is actually a person with a similar job title at the DVLA believe it or not) and asked them to send me confirmation of the categories that appear on my license.

When I received the letter I kept it, and I knew they would also have a copy of that correspondence (if they knew what is good for them). This way, I can back up that they told me which categories were available. I could not just order a new license because I was changing the photo on my photocard.

That is a very good ida Marjay. Thumbs Up

You can do photo changes online if you have a recent passport, since they just use your passport photo on your driving license. I know government agencies working together, whatever next!

Thumbs Up

Do you have this person's contact details? Or who to write to?

I thought you can now ask DVLA to return the original photocard?

Why?

MarJay's idea is brilliant, but personally I would (and do) just tick the "lost" box and pay their £20 Incompetence Tax.

.
I would call into your local DVLA office, if possible and confirm the old licence entitlements first, are you able to pilot a lawnmower etc.

I(f you can't visit then what marjay says is a good idea.

You are right, they would have proof they sent the letter for a whole 90 days.

I can't remember, I just wrote to the head of licensing or something... The person in question is listed on their website as I recall.

You could try contacting them online. I was surprised - OK, amazed - by the quality of the response that I got.

They (say they) won't disclose your details by email, but you could ask them to post them out. Or you could just tell them what's already on your license and ask them to simply confirm that by email.

You can get a copy of all the information DVLA hold about you on their database by making a Driver Register Data Subject Request.

It must be submitted in writing giving a reason for the request and include a £5 fee.

They will send you a dated printout from the DVLA database which will include your licence categories as currently recorded on their system.

I have used the service a couple of times with no problems.
