In a word, yes.

I always do now, in the past I haven't and had no problems but why risk it for the sake of a 10p part?

When I get a new bike I usually buy a few oil filters, washers and a magnetc sump plug from Wemoto then I'm set for a while and do an oil change when I feel like it.

I believe Halfords also sell sump washers if you need one today. I expect a motor factors would be able to help as well.

But of course you went armed with the knowledge of the size you're after, right?

Google the sump plug thread size perhaps.

As they're ally, I'm really not sure that you need to replace.

Thankyou so much <3

Ive never changed one unless one has come with a filter.
As long as the plug hasnt been over tightened and crushed or deformed the washer i would leave it.

It may be 25p but i bet delivery will be a few quid.

I've never done it on the cars or bikes. Just pinch it up and don't over tighten it; the last thing you want is to strip the threads. If you use a Haynes manual or follow an online guide use a bit of common sense as sometimes the torque figures can be a bit over ambitious.

The washers are supposed to crush - that's how they work. They are relatively soft alloys that crush and therefore fill the uneven mating surfaces between the bolt head and the sump face. Once used, they are not suitable for reuse since they are already crushed and won't crush again. You can anneal a copper washer but for a few pence why would you?

There's not much more disheartening than filling up with fresh oil only to see the sump plug leaking, meaning you have to drain and start again - all for the sake of a 10p washer. Of course you could "just nip up the plug a bit tighte.... oh BALLS!! Now I need a new sump...".

Ok, I'm always sceptical when buying shit online, how certain are we that this will fit my bike? What does the 5SL mean? I'm going to order about 10 of these seeing as delivery is £2.25 :l

According to Wemoto the sump plug is a M14. Take a M14 bolt to Halfords and hold it against their sump washers to find the right size.

Hi

I would go for a set like this:-

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Copper-sealing-washers-metric-250-pieces-RH023-/250891718298?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3a6a4fce9a

(bought one from them a few years ago).

Costs a bit more in the short term but saves faffing in the future. And when you find the sizes you use more often just buy a pack of that size.

All the best

Keith

I'm no mechanic but I've done a fair few oil changes.

On my bandit it is an actual crush washer and therefore needs changing. (Also bought 10 at a time from wemoto due to delivery charge).

On my CBR it is not a crush washer but a normal washer.
Haynes destruction manual says change it, actual Honda
manual says only replace if it is badly scored. I reused it no
problem.

So if it is not a really thin crush washer, you should be able
to reuse if still in okay condition.

My local corner shop car spares place does these washers 10 for a quid.

I did my car the other day and just reannealed the existing one.Worked fine.

As for the bikes I have a good look at the one on the drain plug and if it is too badly compressed then I replace it.
