Hi everybody, (hi doctor nick Very Happy )

Just wondering if anyone knows of a cheap GPS for a motorbike and where to get it (either online or local to Hampshire?), English maps only are fine.

Its for my job, i have to go out to customers some times and most of the time I've no idea where they are so I'm stopping every 2-3 miles to check the map on my phone.

any help greatly appreciated,

regards,

Beefamus

Well first off for the GPS you will have to make sure you have a lighter socket, can be gotten off ebay or other places like amazon.

This socket below has got some good reviews from this site recently, purchased one myself yesterday and it arrived today so fast delivery (normal postage)

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/350492171319?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

You can also get a large range of sat navs of ebay, most common preferred sat navs for motorbikes is either the garmin or tom-tom. Myself I'm going towards the garmin satnavs as I don't trust tom-tom.

I've got a charger for a sat nav for my bike.

i know of the big branded motorbike sat navs, didn't know if there was a small branded cheapER sat nav to use for a few months at work and that, basically something that will get me from A - to - B.

Hi there,

You say that you're stopping every 2-3 miles to check the map on your phone, this implies to me that you have a smart phone with a data plan?

I do not know about iPhones, but I know that Android phones can be set up to speak the directions to you over a pair of headphones (perfectly legal.) Using the GPS for this extended amount of time can seriously drain your battery however, so it may be recommended to fit a cigarette lighter to the bike to keep the phone powered (though you say you have one for a Sat-Nav, so I'll assume that will work for a phone too.)

In regards to an actual Sat-Nav I can't offer any help, but someone else may be able to.

I brought a charger for my phone and a weather proof housing and mounted it on the handlebars. I brought a blue tooth headset and just listen to google navigation give me directions that way.

Just get a generic one, you can get them for about £30 the no name ASDA ones. With the saved money you buy something water proof or use a ghetto lunch box and cable ties thing.

My dad has a £80 Tomtom go which i occassionally borrow and stick in a water proof tank bag. It only lasts about 90 minutes though.

Another vote for "anything, pocket, earphone". I use a single flat over-ear phone. Satnav should only ever be a hint anyway, keep your attention on the road.

I do have an iphone a data plan etc and use "NavFree" on it, which i hook to up a set of valcro headphones inside my helmet, but for some reason the speak doesn't reach the headphones once i've started moving, its happened on mutlipul occasions. really annoying i've played with the settings as well but can't get it to go through the headphones.

Does the same happen if you try and listen to music? If so then the headphone jack may be faulty (happened to an iPod of mine once). I've not heard of that make of headphones before, so I'm unsure if they're a special type of headphone, but could they be damaged? I know that often the wires inside of headphones (particularly by the 3.5mm jack at the two actual headphones) can break, and then only work correctly when held at a certain position.

If not then it could be possible that the phone isn't getting a strong enough signal to function correctly. Having the phone on a mount may help with acquiring a GPS signal, but I would want to be sure that would solve the problem before I bought one.

If it's neither of those two then I'm stumped as to why. Can't offer anything specific to try as I don't have an iPhone/iPod to test.

nope works fine when playing music, its weird the sat nav app supports music play back, then when it speaks it dims the music to be heard, the music WILL dim but nothing is said then the music comes back on. you can hear a FAINT murmur but no sense can be made from it... really frustrating.

You gotta love BCF! Thanks to "jordanmoore" I now know that I have an audio feature sat nav on my Android phone. I just have to get a 12v charger socket for my bike and some headphones then I'm sorted! Smile

I second this or the phone idea. The price of a dedicated GPS, most noticeably the Tomtom rider is ridiculous Thumbs Down

Sounds to me like it's a problem with the app then. Are there any freeware or trial ones you could give a shot at using? Often the instructions are quite quiet, but they should really be a an audible level.

I like the look of those headphones, I may have to get myself some (or similar) Thumbs Up I stopped using headphones purely for the fact that my "okay" ones are a royal PITA at falling out, and my others.. well.. 99p from B&M.. what do you expect Laughing Only go in on the rare occasion I need the GPS now Razz
