Well, it happened. Today I went and bought myself a bike Very Happy No pictures sadly as it's got a bit dark, but I'm now the proud owner of a black 1989 F plate TZR Very Happy 12 months T&T, new tyres, new chain, sprocket and shock.

I can't recall being this excited in years. Runs well, but the only thing though, it seems to smoke an awful lot. Seller assured me (I know, but I'm a n00b) that it was normal for a two stroke to do that. But I couldn't help (while I watched him ride it to Sheffield for me) but be reminded of the old game Spyhunter and fog screens Confused Do they really smoke like that or am I looking at needing work on the bike?

Either way I'm totally stoked Very Happy I can't wait to get out on it Very Happy Wahooo Very Happy

You will find that most 2 stroke bikes smoke and give off such a distinctive smell! I love the smell to be honest! But if its letting off a lot of smoke, it could be running too rich. Thats whats wrong with my bike at the moment.

Have fun on it, oh and 2 strokes like a caning now and then.

Also they do smoke alot when cold but they shouldn't smoke at all when warm unless there under heavy acceleration or there burning too much oil Wink.

Keep the rubber side down.

Hehe, my lady's car reeks of two stroke now as I had to give the lad a lift back to Donny Very Happy

Cool, it was just a bit worrying when the garage filled with smoke Shocked It's a very very white smoke, is that normal too? Also the lad who brought it over for me was 18 stone, so that'd be making it work a bit I'd have thought Very Happy

Well if your burning too much oil (rich), then the smoke will be blue. (I think thats right). I don't know what the white smoke is. As you said, it could have been putting a lot of effort into pulling 18 stone, so the engine was being thrashed a bit to get a decent amount of speed.

Very white smoke could possibly mean that coolant liquid is finding its way into the cylinder, through a broken gasket or the such. I'd get it seen to by a mechanic asap if its that much/bad.

On the positive note, nice one on the buy, lovely machines they are. Thumbs Up

Yeah, it was always my intention to take it to the garage round the corner for a lookover anyway.
Cheers all for the kind words and I still can't believe it Very Happy So exciting Very Happy

I hope you enjoy riding it while I'm still stuck on a 50. Don't forget to tell us how it performs. (Please don't bulls**t like many people) I would like to know what they are like because the TZR 125 is on my shortlist of 125's to get when I'm 17.
Cheers

https://www.thebdaman.f2s.com/Bike%20Stuff/TZRforweb.gif

Had a bit of a scare when I couldn't get it started this morning Shocked It took me hours (and a fortunate google that turned up a thread on this forum Very Happy) to find the bloody choke Laughing Soon as I had bam! First kick every time Very Happy

It could do with a bit of tidying, but I'm in love Very Happy

Well, it's all sorted now. Got myself insured (£203 TPFT, not bad), and been down the shops for a bottle of Castrol TTS. So I'm all ready for my first ride out on my own bike (and actually also my first unsupervised ride Shocked).

Extremely excited, but also really pretty nervous, which makes me smile as I thought I was too old to be a chickenshit anymore Very Happy I think I'd feel better if I didn't live in the middle of a city on a permanently busy main road, meaning I have to pull out into traffic without knowing how the bikes going to go Thumbs Down Maybe I should push it round the corner to some quieter roads first Very Happy

Enough typing. Time to go prep it and get her warmed up Thumbs Up Very Happy

edit; Oh yeah, if you see someone on that bike, all in black except for blue jeans doing about 20 on NSL roads, it's me Wink

Oops Embarassed Very Happy

Well that was a lot of fun Thumbs Up Very Happy Took me a while to get it started though, but I think that was my fault as I didn't notice I'd got the fuel tap on full, when the tank was nearly empty Embarassed

The ride itself went well, the bike runs very nicely indeed, but it seems to like the revs in the 6 to 7 thousand plus mark, if I want to change gear with any power (Although at that level, it has a great deal Very Happy). Is this normal? It worries me as I wouldn't push my lady's car to that level and hell does the bike make a racket at 7 thousand plus revs Very Happy I think it was the noise that concerned me more than anything Very Happy

Didn't manage to get too far out sadly as it was so bloody windy out on the tops Thumbs Down Scared the hell out of me when leaning round corners (didn't really get to do that on my CBT) at speed to feel the wind trying to push me over. Felt real nice leaning though Very Happy Most I got out of it was 60mph today (too scared, too windy) and that was only when I worked out the high revs thing. Oh yeah, I had to stop anyway because of the pains in my clutch wrist tendons Very Happy

Very smoky at start, but settles down nicely after a good bit of ragging. It was worrying me, but it seems OK now Very Happy

All in all, big Thumbs Up

This article https://www.survivalskills.clara.net/riding_skills_28.htm has tips for riding in strong winds.

Good luck, the bike looks a beaut!

The power band will be kicking in at 7000rpm. That's where all the power is held on a 125 2 stroke normally. It's absolutely normal for the sudden burst of power around there on a 2 stroke. Enjoy it mate. Thumbs Up
