Just curious since I have seen a bike advertised with a cracked frame.

Is this only suitable for the recycle bin, or could it be repaired? The bike was in an accident.

I dont know where the crack is (because I haven't asked yet), but does this usually mean that there is no coming back for this bike?

How easy would it be to repair?

Worth the hassle?

Sorry if I am being a vague but details are a bit sketchy at the moment. I can find out more information if required.

Cheers for the replies in advance.

Hi

Nothing to stop someone repairing the crack if they have the skills, but most of the time not worth it.

New 2nd hand frame will mean a new identity from the bike the frame came from (ie, frame with log book). Brand new frame is more hassle (but they probably come without a frame number, ready to be stamped up).

All the best

Keith

I`d be thinking about what caused the frame to crack in the first place?

Is it poor quality materials or has the owner been mistreating the bike?

Not exactly a crack, but my bike has a MASSIVE dent in the front left part of the frame about 4 inches from the headstock area...Hidden by fairings when they are attached Laughing

Is the bike an insurance write off? If so, what category?

Aluminium or steel frame?

All depends on how bad the crack is, if it was a big split in a cross beam it would be worse than a small crack in an engine mount for example. Would probably be simpler to buy a new frame with V5 and inform the DVLA of an engine change. It should be quite cheap to be worthwhile.

I presume you know what sort of bike it is?

A mate of mine is on the third frame for his ZX9R, never been crashed.

The frame on a modern sportsbike is distressingly small and lightweight. You order one off the breakers and a couple of days later the postie comes wandering up the drive with a small cardboard box tucked under one arm containing your frame.

It is a 1999 ZX6R

Been in contact with the guy and he is looking for £450 for it.

Thats the crack.

Also needs all fairings, grabrail, indicator, levers to name a few parts.

As far as i can see on my phone it's only the subframe mount? I'd just get that welded and keep an eye on it.

Hi

That should be easily weldable, but would also expect the result to be fairly obvious and put people off buying it in future. If for a track bike or something to run into the ground then possible.

I rebuilt a ZX6R with the owner a few years ago, also due to a cracked frame (below the peg hangers). It is a fair amount of work. Also watch out for minor changes in the frame over the years (ie, on the ZX6R the engine mounts half way down the frame changed design - not a problem except for the delay waiting for the new mounting bolt to be delivered).

All the best

Keith

Or weld both sides so it matches?

If it's not registered as a write off, I'd buy that in a second. Repair would be a piece of piss. If it's a cat B though, new frame time.

If you don't want it, and it's HPI clear, PM me the deetz.
