Hi guys, i was at my local gym on wednesday morning - getting changed from a shower. Long story short, a fight broke out against 4/5 asian guys vs. 1 black guy, black guy manages to get to locker, pulls out knife and stabs 2 of the asian guys.

It happened right in front of me and i wont lie, i was scared!

I dont really want to go back to that gym again, is this is a fair reason to cancel and withdraw from my 12 month contract that i have with them?

I dont want to be lumbered with a big cancelleation fee or risk a bad credit mark for this, but i dont want to be a member of a gym where im paying £40 a month to be exposed to that!
Advice appreciated!!

THanks, nick

Write to them and tell them that you heard about the stabbing and don't want to be a member any more. Tell them you're cancelling your payment and you hope that they'll waive any charges on the basis of their poor security.

As above; I'd be discussing it with the manager.
If they got shirty, I'd be suggesting that perhaps I'd getter a better response with my 'eye witness' report in the local paper.

Direct debit? Cancel it, job done, get into the reasons if and only if they try to chase you up. You won't be the only one.

If you've been daft enough to give them a credit or debit card number then you'll need to push a bit harder, but since you were an actual eye witness they'd be mental to try and collect.

Anyway, dish on the details, was it over hos or dope?

The only way I managed to get out of a gym membership was by telling the company I was emigrating. When I went travelling I could only get a suspension until I returned. Rolling Eyes

Even though you have mitigating circumstances, they will weedle it so that you cannot get out... I would use the easy option (lie). Thumbs Up

Nothing really to do with it being their fault - just a case where it's reasonable you no longer want to go - but on that, you are presumably sold the gym having a certain ambiance for £40 a month.

I knew the one I went to had a 3 month notice period. But I also did take note that you could get it suspended if you were made redundant.
I was made redundant and took them a letter from my ex-employer stating this straight away.
7 months later they were wanting me to prove I still wasn't in a job. I wasn't, but wasn't claiming benefits and the suggestions they had to 'prove' it didn't work. Eventually I started writing a letter to the directors as well as some industry jerk-wank publicity firm one was a member of, including another issue I had previously complained about (them blatantly selling my email address to spammers) and magically the manager could cancel it properly, regardless of what he previously claimed.

No, you are sold the gym having certain facilities/equipment/classes for 40 quid a month.

That's like trying to get out of your contract with the gym because the hot bird with the big tits and no sports bra has stopped training for the marathon.

I take it that it was reported to the gym and the police at the time.....
If not, why not ???

If not then you ain't got a chance of getting out of the contract.

I bet when you signed up, you gave them your card details... So if you cancel the DD. The will simply take payment via your card details.
Nothing wrong with them doing this, as you are in a fixed term contract.

That's a little different.
Sure, neither are in the contract, but then neither generally are the specific exercise machines, number of classes etc.
The gym may well have used words like 'premier' in the brochures which do suggest NOT having knife fights in the locker room.

Regardless, as with speeding tickets, he wants an 'easy out' and this certainly seems to be the case where one should be available.

Do you know why gyms give you such long contracts... because people are lazy and will find any excuse to stop going.

Interracial-naked-locker room-knife fight is a new one I'll grant you, but essentially, fatty doesn't want to go to the gym any more.

Plenty of gyms don't have so bad contracts - generally the ones with a lot more genuine staff attitudes - rather than irritatingly american 'have a nice day' attitudes.

(Though, to be fair, the sports staff at aforementioned David Lloyd which I got to know were all cool.)

How many times would you have to be raped to stop using a gym?
(And presuming not talking your asian gyms where most of the people probably weigh the same as one of your legs Wink ).

Hey, some of the guys are huge... since they can get a doctor controlled course of steroids and they have nothing better to do... but they still only do tiny little weights and never get a sweat on. Laughing

It's very surreal to get a round of applause for bench pressing 60kg, or to be asked to spot people benching 20kg Laughing

Anyway, just saying, if I had a problem with someone going to the gym, it would be up to me to forfeit the money or man up and sort it out.

But then, I never sign myself for any contract with more than 1 month notice. Because I'm moody and full of angst.

That would be a very good reason.

I stopped and used as one of the reasons the guy with the long beared not showering before going into the pool.

I use to a General Manager David Lloyd leisure -

Gym contracts are incredibly hard to get out off - and they will pursue any outstanding monies owed.

However - if you know how to play the game then you can get them to close down your membership.

Firstly call the gym and request a meeting with the General Manager - explain and tell him that you feel afraid to use the gym again as you may be called upon to be a witness etc etc - you want the membership cancelled asap.

If the GM won't meet with you (some of the fuckers I worked with wouldn't say to words the actually members that pay their salaries) write a letter - copy in HO and request a copy to be sent to the Regional Director and request a response within 7 days - don't just cancel the DD = it will get passed to a third party and they will constantly ring and write to you.

That should do it. Let me know how it goes.

One of the things noted on David Lloyd's conditions is that if you let someone else use your card, they'll cancel your membership.

My thought was that if I wanted to get around it else-wise, I'd find some tramps and offer them them the chance of a free shower and to sit around all day in a nice warm building using my card.
I reckon they'd fairly quickly cancel it for me Smile.

This. If they insist that you can't quit, read your contract and find out the circumstances under which *they* can terminate your membership. Then turn up flouting all their rules and see how long they want to keep you.

It worked for the black guy, after all.

Actually there is no possible way they could do that.

To set up a direct debit you need the account number and sort code, not the card number, thus meaning they cannot debit the account as they do not have sufficient details.

I know what details required to set up a DD.
What many gym's do is take 1st payment via your card to ensure they have a back up method of payment should you cancel the DD....
Given that most gym's are 12 month contracts, they use this as security Thumbs Up

If anyones actually done that you're into insta chargeback land, and if they do it on a regular basis visa and/or mastercard will rape them for it. Unless specifically specified in the contract the fact that they have your card details doesn't give them a continuing authority to debit it.

When I wanted to cancel my last 'big chain' membership (village) they tried to tell me I needed to give them some ludicrous period (IIRC I gave notice on the 10th, they told me I'd have to pay for all the next month and up to the 10th of the month after, contract period was 30 days).

Worked out what 30 days notice took me to over and above what I'd paid by DD (about £9.20) sent them a cheque for it, with a covering letter saying that I'd take their banking of the cheque as confirmation of termination and cancelled DD.

About 2 months later got a call telling me I owed all sorts, pointed out the later and the fact that they did bank the cheque and heard nothing else
