Cancelling my Gym membership

Hi guys, i was at my local gym on wednesday morning - getting changed from a shower. Long story short, a fight broke out against 4/5 asian guys vs. 1 black guy, black guy manages to get to locker, pulls out knife and stabs 2 of the asian guys.

It happened right in front of me and i wont lie, i was scared!

I dont really want to go back to that gym again, is this is a fair reason to cancel and withdraw from my 12 month contract that i have with them?

I dont want to be lumbered with a big cancelleation fee or risk a bad credit mark for this, but i dont want to be a member of a gym where im paying £40 a month to be exposed to that!

If they got shirty, I'd be suggesting that perhaps I'd getter a better response with my 'eye witness' report in the local paper.

Direct debit? Cancel it, job done, get into the reasons if and only if they try to chase you up. You won't be the only one.

If you've been daft enough to give them a credit or debit card number then you'll need to push a bit harder, but since you were an actual eye witness they'd be mental to try and collect.

Anyway, dish on the details, was it over hos or dope?

The only way I managed to get out of a gym membership was by telling the company I was emigrating. When I went travelling I could only get a suspension until I returned.

Even though you have mitigating circumstances, they will weedle it so that you cannot get out... I would use the easy option (lie).

Nothing really to do with it being their fault - just a case where it's reasonable you no longer want to go - but on that, you are presumably sold the gym having a certain ambiance for £40 a month.

Do you know why gyms give you such long contracts... because people are lazy and will find any excuse to stop going.

Interracial-naked-locker room-knife fight is a new one I'll grant you, but essentially, fatty doesn't want to go to the gym any more.

Plenty of gyms don't have so bad contracts - generally the ones with a lot more genuine staff attitudes - rather than irritatingly american 'have a nice day' attitudes.

(Though, to be fair, the sports staff at aforementioned David Lloyd which I got to know were all cool.)

How many times would you have to be raped to stop using a gym?
(And presuming not talking your asian gyms where most of the people probably weigh the same as one of your legs ).

I use to a General Manager David Lloyd leisure -

Gym contracts are incredibly hard to get out off - and they will pursue any outstanding monies owed.

However - if you know how to play the game then you can get them to close down your membership.

Firstly call the gym and request a meeting with the General Manager - explain and tell him that you feel afraid to use the gym again as you may be called upon to be a witness etc etc - you want the membership cancelled asap.

If the GM won't meet with you (some of the fuckers I worked with wouldn't say to words the actually members that pay their salaries) write a letter - copy in HO and request a copy to be sent to the Regional Director and request a response within 7 days - don't just cancel the DD = it will get passed to a third party and they will constantly ring and write to you.

That should do it. Let me know how it goes.

One of the things noted on David Lloyd's conditions is that if you let someone else use your card, they'll cancel your membership.

My thought was that if I wanted to get around it else-wise, I'd find some tramps and offer them them the chance of a free shower and to sit around all day in a nice warm building using my card.
I reckon they'd fairly quickly cancel it for me .
