Do you or don't you?

Should you or shouldn't you?

Discuss!

FA and I just were just discussing it, so thought it would be an interesting topic! Thumbs Up

I red line my bikes all the time, though I have hit the limiter a few times since I got the GPZ. Confused

I do, but then again i ride a 50cc 2-stroke. Laughing

I only tend to red line it when changing gear, and sometimes in 6th, when you want to see how fast it can go.

I've too much mechanical sympathy to redline anything.

Sometimes in 3rd, when I'm pulling onto a fast/busy road and know I really need to keep up.

Doubt I could in 4th or 5th without a hill to help me.

Don't really see the point in going all the way to the redline, I get very little accelleration beyond about 7.5k.

First time I did it, noticed 5th gear performed far better... can only mean it done good...

This is on a 4 Stroke GN125 btw.

I doubt it. I change gear partly through feel, partly through sound.

It really does depend on my mood whether I red line it, other times I change up about 4500RPM, thus achieving my dizzy heights of 75MPG Very Happy.

'Course

When the bike is fully warmed up. I do regular oil changes as well.

Tip: Use ear plugs, then it doesnt sound so "bad" for the engine Smile.

My bike does not have a tacho so there is no red line as such

there is however a rev limiter which is met every day

really for the most part I use feel and sound and think that to rev to the max all the time is not mechanically sympathetic whilst once in a while it is good to clear things out.

I have more experience of why to thrash an engine relating to variable valve operation car engines such as the 2.0dth as fitted to vectra's than bikes though

Max power starts to die off before its deep in the red so theres no real gain in doing it.

However there is times I accelerate that much I hit the limiter before I've realised whats going on. Laughing

No point on the 660 single.

On the other bikes I am not averse to stuffing it right up there, IMO that is what it is there for (rev to here), I don't go beyond it.

Hi

Red line them fairly often, sometimes go a bit further but generally avoid it.

All the best

Annoys me most of the time, when tossers go up the A1, in 3rd gear at the red line, trying to sound like they're actually going fast. I do do it, but it's when I'm actually caining the bike, not just trying to sound fast.

I generally change it about 9,000 (125 you see) though when I'm out for a rake I will take it up to or fairly close to the redline in most gears. The other day I was in 2nd on a 40 road and I went to overtake someone (doing about 30) when I ended up going about 3/4 into the redline. Scared me for a bit. Other than that I will only go into it the odd time when I'm thrashing it or fast acceleration/overtake.

never as far as i can remember hit 14.5k on my zx6r, but im told according to the tacho it runs to 15.5k before the limiter. I usually dont exceed about 12k, but when your riding that fast your never looking at the tacho! Also the rev counters on most Jap bikes seem to be out, and they often read 1 or even 2000rpm more than the engine is actually doing. on small bikes and 2 strokes, you do get a feel for the best time to change gear, its easy with a stroker, you just wait until it eventually reaches the powerband, and count about 1second before changing up, and again and again lol!
