Not ridden a bike in over a year, and was looking at buying a ZX6R or a ZX9R as there's seems to be some nice examples about at the moment.

My question is this... How much of a difference is there? Would it be feasible jumping on the bike and riding away with out too much issues? Or is there a massive difference that I really need to think about?

I imagine the difference in power and throttle/clutch control being more sensitive but keep looking at these bikes and really want to get one. Wanted to get a good idea before i take the plunge and catch a train to pick one up.

P.S. I've never ridden anything more powerful than a Triumph Sprint 955 RS

Change up at the same point on the ZX6 and you'll probably have a similar engine performance experience to the SV - it's just that this is the point the 600 is really starting to come on to song, while the SV has run out of puff.

ZX9 has got more low and midrange, but moderate your right hand and you should be fine.

Of course, both have better brakes (but not massively so when compared to SV ones in good nick) and suspension.

Providing you approach it sensible, either should be fine Thumbs Up.

The power isn't important, it's the power delivery that matters, and finding a delivery that suits your style of riding. Don't worry about it running away with you, throttle goes both ways as does the clutch.

ZX9s are kittens if you keep the revs down, they are rather flat at the bottom end and loud pipes tend to make them more so. As with any carb fed bike, it's not too hard to balls it up though.

In comparison to my mates Sprint RS my zx9 didn't have as much grunt in a roll on, but absolutely destroyed it once I got past 7k rpm.

ZX9R fuel consumption is good.

If you are careful it's tame enough, but thing can quickly get out of hand.

I've had the rear wheel spin up on mine at 80mph when overtaking in 4th with a heavy fist.

I think we've all missed a very important point.

The ZX9R looks a lot better than the SV650. OMnomnom!

ZX9R isn't intimidating to ride, until you start being a nobber.

Fuckload quicker than a SV650 though.

Remember C model Zx9's have gearbox issues, it's why mine is off the road at present, when I can be arsed I'll fit my new Z1000 'box.

Quite overgeared as standard, too. Must make a start on mine.

C2 models do not have gearbox issues at all, and most C1 models will be fine. Just the odd few had issues, similar to ZZR600s and R6s and Thundercats.

I went from a SV650 to a Z1000 (I believe it's a reworked ZX9 lump) and absolutely loved the Z.

As G says, it has the same flexible low down grunt but an amazing screaming top end - in comparison it just keeps pulling and pulling. The transition is only as challenging as you make it. If you want to pootle, it was happy to bimble along but I couldn't resist the temptation to understand how it would behave if I felt the need to open it up Very Happy

I'd happily have another one when the kids get a bit older, and would certainly look at a ZX9

C2's are basically the same as C1's, different colours and a harder rear spring IIRC.

The gearbox design itself is poor, see here.

https://www.zx-9r.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=23755

This was rectified by E models and Z1000's etc. Usually changing the selector forks will cure a C, but I'm doing the whole gearbox swap.
