Can I see Jupiter or Venus ? (not Uranus .. snigger)

So, I am walking in the woods this evening ... and its pitch black.
I know nothing of the planets and stuff... but I do like to have a look and wonder whats up there.

Anyway, I see these 2 bright stars .... no others, just these 2.
Then I remember that I have an app on my phone which shows the stars in the direction you point the phone.

It tells me that I am looking at Jupiter and Venus ?
Is this right ?

It was taken at 6pm today - from south of UK.
(Jupiter is the one close to the moon apparently).

Yep, it's right. With a little bit of effort you can just make out some of the moons of Jupiter.

It has been there for a couple of weeks now. Not seen it so prominent in a while.

A crafty tip for identifying planets vs stars is that planets do not 'twinkle' like stars do - I think it is because they are closer - something to do with interstellar radiation distorting light beams.

Generally are brighter too.

Stars twinkle because even though they look big they're not, they're just bright. So small atmospheric distortions fuck with their appearance a lot.
Planets are far larger in the sky but much dimmer as they are just reflecting the suns light. Atmospheric distortions therefore effect their appearance less.

That's why no matter how much you optically zoom in to star it stays the same size.

Yeah quite often you can see some of the planets with your naked eye. Jupiter and Venus tend to be the more common, due to proximity and size, but Saturn's another common one.

I've always been interested in astronomy, and I'd like to get back into photography so would be good to merge the two interests. Far too much light pollution here though in UK, particularly in the cities.

Went to South Africa a few years ago, and we were literally in the middle of nowhere in one of the national parks, and you could actually see a massive band of stars right the way across the sky. Didn't realise it until my dad told me that it was actually the spiral of the Milky Way. Also could see another galaxy in the sky as a faint hazy blob. Apparently the Milky Way is much more visible in the southern hemisphere due to the way the planet is oriented.


I think it really put things into perspective of how small and insignificant we are compared to the universe.

Get yourself the star map thingy from Google on your phone, Will tell you instantly what planet/star your looking at.

Mars is also visable after 10pm usually too. It even has a slightly red glow to it too
