I was wondering what is the best way to go about painting an exhaust pipe?

Can I just simply remove it from the bike and paint it? Or do I have to sand anything? I have absolutely no idea Embarassed

Thanks in advance!

If its just mild steel then maybe sand any rust off (use wire wool/brush or sand paper whatever) if there is any.

Look for a specific type of heat resistant paint doesn't have to be exhaust specific, for example on my Varadero used to use a can of matt black designed for painting chimney sections covered up to 1500 degrees I think.

Right now doing the CBR headers, just sanded a little rust off them and sprayed two coats of VHT matt black, no need for primer with that stuff but check the back of the tin/can before use some may require a primer.

What I've done in the past it.

Sand down with 400grit paper. Smoother the pipe the better it looks.
Clean with thinners or white spirit of some sort
Get warm near heater
Paint with high temperature paint..recommend Pj-1 paint. Even used this on a log burning stove. And goes on nice and even looking. Buy the spray type not brush on.

pj-1 seems to get the best reviews.

If you use the search function you can also find loads of other threads on this subject and see what you think.
