Not a good idea to crush the foam as its that, that gives protection in a accidetn...

As to best for your head....

Get to HG or other store and try every make going. Till you find one that fits Thumbs Up

You need to try them on and keep them on for along as you can in the shop to make sure it fits and doesn't give you headache. For instance I'm a large but my carbon caberg needed to be a xl as it was too tight.

The best time to try lids on is when you are hot, then the idea is to keep it on as long as you can whilst in the shop till you can find the best fit...if you get a headache or your ears start burning, or the chin area is too high then you will know that it's the wrong shape for you.

If you are lucky, the person in the shop will able to advise you towards a helmet that is likely to fit better. Thumbs Up

Thanks guys

Problem is I did all that I.e. left it on etc with this one, no issue in the shop at all.

I hear that shoei are a more narrow fit? Is that true? Are any other brands better suited?

I had the same problem. I have a small narrow head too.

My first ever lid was a Centurion; next was a Kiwi (which fitted perfectly) but when I came to getting another the Kiwi had changed design and no longer fitted my head Rolling Eyes. I think I went Shoei thereafter and that thing ended up being too loose. Then I had an AGV which was perfect until it (and me got an absolute soaking to and from a rally)...when it dried out, I swear it had twisted somehow. Next one I tried after that was a Caberg...which was hideous, and it got trashed within a couple of months anyhow.

I now have the Suomy. But in the shop I wasn't sure whether to go with the S or XS, because my head size is 54 and the S is (54/55) and the XS (53/54), so I went XS and when my head gets hot it hurts my forehead. So it's back to the drawing board for me.

I know that BMW do a lid which is size 54, as my mate has one, and it fits me perfectly...so I'm considering going down that route next, if I can find one that isn't in the £200 bracket!

^^^ I have told you that lot to show you that there is no way that anyone can tell you 'this is the lid you want' because there is no exact science to it...it is something you will have to work out for yourself. Sorry. Exclamation

Personally, if I were modifying a helmet, then rather than crushing it, I'd shave the polystyrene very slightly, on the basis that the part nearest your head is already pre-crushed by it being too tight. Only you can make the decision whether that leaves you with enough to protect you. How good was the front SHARP rating to begin with?

It is the standard way of accelerating the helmet bedding in to fit the shape of your head and is perfectly acceptable.

None of us have the same shaped heads, and sometimes the front of the helmet is where pressure points form which in turn can cause a headache until it moulds to your shape.

So gently pushing the liner across the top front of your helmet around the areas where you can fel pressure is absolutely fine, despite what others here may tell you.

It's an x801 so gets a good on front protection

Your point gives me another question. Purely from a safety point of view are the sharps tess the best tests? I had heard comments that they weren't great.

I have the same sort of head shape, and find it difficult to find anything that fits. Shark, AGV and Suomy were all the wrong shape and I couldn't get anywhere with them.

I currently have an Arai Viper GT which is designed to fit a "long oval" shape.

My Shark was fine in the shop, perfect through all my training, but became an absolute bitch when riding for a reasonable length of time at road legal speeds.

I tried the "accelerated bedding in" technique but eventually came to the conclusion that the distraction it caused was affecting my enjoyment of riding, so I bought my Shoei, based upon it being a good fit and the quietest in Ride tests.

Go to J&S or similar, and try on everything you can afford - just allow a little more slack over your forehead.

Dunno, T.C might have some views.

However, if the testing is consistent then it should give a basis for comparing helmets against each other. Don't just look at the overall rating, have a look at the details to see where helmets are strong and weak.

From whom? People who have spunked £400 on a lid are hardly going to welcome news that a £30 Box performs better in an off.

As I understand it, some of the Big Labels say that their lids don't come off so well in side impacts because those are relatively rare. That may be true on the track, but are you planning to use it on a track?

Ok, been trying on lids today, here's my findings.

Arai- weird fit lid sits far to high on my head
Shark - large too big medium too small
Agv - same as the shark
Nolan and x lite - same if not worse than my current x lite

This left me with

Shoei qwest and xr 1100
Hjc Rpha

Both at nice, around the same price (Ben spies on the Hjc), Hjc is stupidly light but gets poor sharp rating shoei gets 5 stars.

Has anybody any thoughts on these mainly from a noise and general ride point of view.? See a review on the shoei (qwest) saying its loud and noisy.

Thanks guys
