been looking at the suzuki gs500 and the kawasaki er500. can anybody give me some ideas?. im coming from a derestricted aprilia rs

The world is your oyster. If you want something reliable then any of the jap bikes (Er5, GS500, XJ600) are fine first bikes, Dnt personally know which is best but you will get loads of feedback from owners on here.

There's plenty of other interesting bikes though you might not have considered, triumph street triples, monsters, etc. might need more looking after than a Japanese ride, but that's half the fun!

I have a restricted 98 GPZ500S with bad-ass 90's stickers on it.

It has carbs so it a bitch to start in the cold, the screen is pointless, can be a little cramped and it looks like shit. The plus points are its easy enough to maintain and service, got it for pennies and I love it. Compared to a 125 any big bike would have blown me socks off. The way I see it is I'll always crave more speed/performance and if I jump in at the deep end I'll have nowhere to go. I'm kind of working my way up to eek out the grin-factor of getting on a faster machine.( plus I'm skint Smile )

I would read up on what bikes like being restricted before you buy and perhaps try sitting on a few in dealers.

You haven't mentioned budget, how much time your willing to spend on it, what you need it for, luggage space, pillions and what you like in a bike. Make your own choice as its your money at the end of the day Thumbs Up

Smile hi bud, have a look at Honda's, they are bullet proof, 600 or 650 would be better when it comes to de-restricting, the CB family are good, the deauville is also good but slightly heavy, contrary to misconception they are not dull, just not as fast in the rev range as other bikes, but you will still get low triple figures on the speedo if inclined,I know cause I own one,and been there, you also get the added extra of intergrated panniers, anyway, look around and have fun doing it...stay loose and safe Thumbs Up

If you can cope with a heavier bike the Honda Deauville may work for you. Good standard luggage built in, shaft drive so you don;t have to oil the chain and good weather protection too. Quite ugly though and definitely not cool.
