More details on the laptop would help.

In the mean time:

Double check the password to be sure, completely delete the network profile in manage wireless networks and re enter the password, maybe even try using the WPS button if your home hub has it.

Is DHCP up? Is the laptop getting assigned a local ip address? And if so, what is it?

Is the wireless card made by Atheros? Check in device manager to find out. Atheros drivershave had a flakey WPA2 implementation for a long long time, it'll play ball with some routers, but a few higher end models won't have anything to do with it. Either updating to the latest drivers or simply switching to WPA1 will cure this.

Its a cheapo bag of shit Lenvo laptop, only needed it for word processing and tinterweb really.

And not sure on ip etc as im useless with stuff like this. When i put the router password in, it will connect to the router but then says limited access. Signal is nearly full. And then it assigns to next doors open connection.

Does the router block new connections unless authorised?
I'm not au fait with the BT routers, but I know some routers default to this setting.

if it says limited access then security is not a problem.

are there any other devices on this network? i.e. do you have a desktop computer/another laptop?

does the wired connection work?

can you get to the router admin page? 192.168.1.254 for the BT home hub? if you can login to the router go to advanced setings and reset the DHCP list

if all else fails and you haven't really messed with the settings on the home hub, just do a full factory reset (usually there is hard reset button the router that you must push with a pin and hold down for a few seconds)
in fairness this is probably the quickest way to solve any issues without tearing your hair out

There is my desktop which has a wired connection to the router, girlfriends laptop which is wireless, and two Iphones.

All other devices including any mates who come round and have a laptop or iphone/android etc connect straight away to the router once the password is put in on their device.

Wrong

The atheros WPA2 bug will cause the card to appear to connect, then simply hang when it comes to actually authenticating. Windows will think the card is connected to the router, but won't actually receive a single bonafide packet back from the router meaning no IP or DNS.

End result = limited access because of a security quirk. Given the additional info I suspect this isn't the issue at hand though.

Frankly, if it's trying to connect, then failing and promptly wandering over to another connection, then it sounds like either you've typo'd the password, the wireless card doesn't support the security method the router wants or the router is giving the laptop the boot. When you say new, you mean new to you? or actually a brand new machine? What's the model of it? If it's an older machine with a more basic wireless chipset it may simply not support WPA2 at all.

As above, it's also worthwhile checking to see if the router is allowing new connections or perhaps even filtering by Mac addresses, this too could cause the behaviour you are describing.

Moar infos pls! Neutral

It's either:
1. Further away from the router than the other devices (i.e. a signal problem). Test for this by sticking the new laptop right next to the router and trying again. If this works, let us know.

Or
2. A settings / driver issue on the laptop (with what you've described my money is on this one).
Recommend you
a. Plug it into the router via ethernet cable and look for an updated version of the driver for the wireless card (if clueless, check for Windows updates, it'll be in the optional updates if you're lucky). Particularly relevant for Atheros wireless cards, as explained above.
b. Then delete the wireless network from the list (on Win 7 its Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Centre > Manage wireless networks - and then right click on the network name in there and click 'Remove' and then 'Yes').
c. Then start setting up the network again and ensure you get the password right.
d. You'll hopefully be online by now. If you're not, then you need to go back to the Network and Sharing Centre, then go into 'Change adapter settings'. In here you will see a "Wireless Network Connection". Right click on that writing, and then left click on 'Status'. Then click on 'Details'. And then give us all the information in that little window (specifically, we need the IPv4 address, the default gateway, and the DNS servers but if in doubt just give us the lot via screenshot, and we can help you further). This is the same sort of information as is available via the ipconfig command others have already mentioned, but it is easier for you to pick out those relevant details for us.

Good luck Very Happy

Tried doing a fresh connection. Still no joy in connecting to the internet.

The Wireless Card is a realtek rtl8187b

the information you need is as follows

IPv4 - 192.168.1.67

IPv4 default gateway - 192.168.1.254

IPv4 DNS servers - 192.168.1.254

It said that whilst it was connected to your Home hub? Or your neighbours, what you've stated there means that as far as the router is concerned, the laptop is connected, is it still getting booted and switching over to the open wireless nearby?

Is the laptop actually new? It's not a home access model by any chance is it?

When you say no joy in connecting to the internet, what is actually saying you are not on the net, Internet explorer? Network and sharing centre? What's the error message actually say?

If you run:
Code:
ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig_all.txt

in the command line then it will save the output from "ipconfig /all" in to a text document located at "C:\ipconfig_all.txt" so that you could easily post the whole thing if anyone needs it.

As for the actual solution to your problem - I'm getting no ideas at the top of my head. Have you tried rebooting the router though? I know it seems simple, but it's fixed a similar problem for me before. (New connections couldn't connect, but people already connected were just fine.)

Have you got a firewall or any internet security software running on the laptop?
An if you have, have you tried disabling it?

That's good, i'm happy that your laptop has been able to at least partially connect to the wireless network.

However, we need to go back to my instruction 2.a. - update the driver on your machine for the wireless card:
There's a link to a driver download here, you just need to know what operating system you're running (Right click on 'Computer' under the start menu and then click 'Properties' or 'System Properties' and it'll bring up a screen with the information on it if you look carefully).
https://www.realtek.cz/realtek-driver.php?realtek=wireless

If after the driver update and a reboot you've still got no joy, then you need to slow down the wireless on the router side as it'll be running in dual-band N mode (i.e. up to 300mbps) which doesn't play well with some wireless cards (i.e. yours, if you've got this far). You'll want to change it to 145/150/154mbps (could be called any of these). To do this you'll need to log in to the router (by typing 192.168.1.254 in your address bar of your browser and then logging in with the username and password - that you'll either know or have to google). Unfortunately i can't actually tell you where the setting is with a Superhub as i don't work with them.
